Blood tests abnormal
« on: March 08, 2019, 03:02:04 PM »

Hi All,

This is my first time posting. I would like advice please. I am 49 and have had a lot of perimeno symptoms. Mainly periods stopped for 3 months, then back >:( every 24/26 days, then stopping again. I have had migraines, mood swings, tinnitis, irritability, hair loss, heart palpitations, chest pains but not sweats as yet.  So I went to my doctor who sent off blood tests for Thyroid function & hormone levels. They have come back abnormal and I am post menopausal !I always thought if I am still having periods I am perimenopausal?  I have an appointment to see him later today to discuss the results. But I just wondered if anyone had had similar results back. I am new to learning about the symptoms, this forum has helped a lot, thanks.

Hi kmb and welcome
My last lot of bloods were nearly ALL abnormal, saw a specialist who said they were borderline abnormal and he wasn't worried but my dr said, but they were high borderline so I was left wondering who was telling me the correct story, after all sorts of tests all was ok,apparently menopause can do many things to you, including give you abnormal blood tests 😏🤨 what next.good luck

Hi KMB
 :welcomemm:

You are not considered POST menopausal until you have gone a full 12 months without a period.
So, if your still having periods, you will be peri menopausal....

Hi KMB

 :welcomemm: from me too.

As jillydoll says - having periods - still peri-menopausal and not there yet. They cannot diagnose menopause on basis of FSH tests as these are variable. See this link on this website: https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/diagnose.php

"A normal level does not exclude early menopausal transition and a raised level does not exclude continuing ovarian function. One raised level should therefore not be relied upon as a reason to stop using contraception since egg release can still occur late in the menopausal transition."

I wonder how you got on with the doctor? Do let us know!

Hi all,

Thank you for your replies. I went for my doctor's appointment.  My thyroid is fine thankfully and my FSH level came back at 35 so he said that was why it flagged up abnormal. He said basically my ovaries are failing and i am perimenopausal ( not post menopausal as the receptionist had told me !). He has offered HRT or I can try a natural herbal supplements to try first from like Holland & Barrett as I am low on estrogen. Not sure which one I should take, I think the natural approach first may help but will have to look into which is most beneficial.

Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again

Glad you got it cleared up kmb. At least now you know where you stand.
Theres lots of information on here about different HRT and alternatives. Maybe do a bit of research to help you make a decision on what is best for you.

I would also say . Dont be afraid to ask any questions you want. Theres a lot of experience, knowledge and support on here.

Good luck.

Yes birdy. The ovaries are winding down not failing.
KMB I hope you dont find this patronising but did your doc mention you might still be ovulating (even if its irregular). Just a thought as if you are you might still be fertile.

I wish GPs wouldn't use words like failing.  Menopause is normal.  Every symptom is normal  ::)

:welcomemm: and welcome to the Wonderful World of Confusion  ;)

Menopause: the last monthly period.  Then none.  But we don't know until months later if that 'was it', hence the suggestion of being 12 months without a period/show to be in menopause.  Peri- is when the hormones begin to falter, come, go ......... mine came and went.  I would bleed as normal for me then miss several months.  Fortunately without flushes.  I did have itchy skin though  ::)

It's 'the change'.  Does what it says on the tin and sometimes, takes it's time  :poke2:  ::).  Browse round.  Make notes.

Some ladies find that keeping a mood/symptom/food diary of use.  Lots of threads here about exercise, pets, gardening; we talk about menopause sometimes ;-).
