Utrogestan question
« on: January 28, 2019, 11:52:43 AM »

Hi hoping someone can help me.  I have been taking 200mg utrogestan orally for 12 days out of my cycle, no problems and I actually feel better during my progesterone days.  This was prescribed by my specialist.  My GP has taken over prescribing and this month I got the 200mg vaginal suppositories which I thought was usually used in fertility treatment.  I'm not against trying it vaginally, and was considering this as my bleeding is still not quite under control, however can I use 200mg vaginally, or is this too much? Any advice appreciated

Hello emmapurple,

As far as I know there's only one Utrogestan available. You can use it both ways. They are not suppositories, just capsules that can be taken orally or used intravaginally.

Thanks for the reply Connolly, however the GP has prescribed the 200mg pessaries usually used in fertility treatment, just wondered if this was ok to use as part of hrt?

As far as I know the 200mg ones are not licensed for hrt. X

Although some ladies on fertility forums (and probably their doctors) call them 'pessaries', they are actually capsules and both presentations are exactly the same, but of course the 200 mg version capsule is bigger.

They were sold in similar boxes but now Besins have changed the box to a pink version that is supposed to be the ones prescribed for fertility purposes.

In the UK the 100 mg is the only one licensed now for menopause:

Of course, even better if you have been prescribed the 200 mg. ;)

They are exactly the same!!!! 100 mg 200 mg same ingredients, excipients, coating, whether vaginal or oral.

As such they are licensed for HRT, but they (Besins) (at request of UK?) just stopped producing them or rather packaging them with the HRT leaflet rather than the fertility one.

In France they are listed as vaginal or oral - just here in UK we have to be different  ::). Heaven only knows why they stopped packaging the (identical) 200 mg capsule for HRT so that we have to take those tiny 100 mg pesky little balls! For most of the time I've been taking utrogestan I used the 200 mg HRT ones vaginally but now have to put up with the 100 mg.

So - if you want to take it orally - then go ahead - but most of us who use them vaginally would prefer to have one slightly larger capsule to poke up there!

When I took my prescription to the pharmacy it said 200mg and they asked me if it was for oral or vaginal use as the 200m single 'tablet' comes with an applicator and is more expensive than 100mg tablets that you can take two of to make 200mg. Perhaps this is why you've got a vaginal pessary now not the 100mg tablets.

Hello orangefoot,

You may be right! Applicators have been requested by ladies on fertility treatment for many years
http://forum.doctissimo.fr/grossesse-bebe/fertilite-infertilite/appel-applicateur-utrogestan-sujet_174831_1.htm and it seems their prayers have been answered. I understand they have the 'privilege' because they have to use the dreadful thing 3 times a day (600 mg).
