Premarin
« on: November 16, 2018, 02:58:56 PM »

Have been reading Dr Blumings book on oestrogen matters and see he prefers Premarin as it has 3 different oestrogens and one of them that is not in plant based oestrogens supports the brain at a cellular level . Has anyone ever switched from plant based to Premarin ?

Hi Winterose

Sorry you've had no replies.  I'm probably not much help but didn't want you query to go unanswered.  I have been recommended by a menopause clinic to change from estrogel to Premarin since I am not getting on well with Proff Studds regime but am not sure what to do either.  Did you find the bio-identical  (assume they are plant based) didn't help or are you new to thinking about trying HRT?

Most gynaecologists and menopause specialists today would prescribe estradiol only because it is bio-identical = body-identical. Premarin is out of favour - because it contains a mix of oestrogens only one of which ( I think) is estradiol and the rest are horse oestrogens. It is also not made in a way that would appeal to most women ie from pregnant mares' urine (I presume it conforms to animal welfare standards - but still...). The fact that estradiol is plant based is immaterial - because the resultant compound is structurally identical to the compounds our body makes - it is only the raw material that is extracted from plants. The synthesis of estradiol from these plant extracts is an industrial process subject to strict regulations - and is as good as the real thing (that our bodies make). Any hormone added exogenously (ie from outside the body) will behave to some extent differently from one produced endogenously (produced internally) in its effect on the rest of our metabolism and hormone synthesis (re feedback mechanisms).

I would be surprised if a foreign oestrogen (from horses and found in Premarin) would be better for the brain than our own! - unless he is talking about another oestrogen that also occurs in humans as well as horses? I would want to see what he is basing that on.....

To answer your question there are women who have gone to or reverted to Premarin from estradiol but I can't remember who they are! It is usually the other way these days.

I just read this book after it being recommended on here, mainly for the progesterone chapter but found all the oestrogen stuff very interesting, albeit a little research heavy!

It’s very much about challenging the WHI study, particularly for breast cancer sufferers and nice to have a UK book for a change.

They quote bio-identical Estradiol as “not as harmful” but also “not as helpful”. Apparently Premarin contains at least ten molecular forms of oestrogen. Equalin is the form that stimulates the growth of neurons in the cortex and other regions of the brain and is the most protective for the brain. The harm of the animal based oestrogen is a small increase in the risk of strokes but it seems to increase protection over many cancers like uterine, as does the Ethinyl Estradiol in the Pill.

They also say that not all forms of oestrogen have equal benefits on cognitive function and reducing heart disease where the oral form is more beneficial than the patch in preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke.

I have always felt strange and unbalanced when I’ve tried Estradiol, which, even though my own oestrogen levels have been too high, I haven’t felt when taking the pill so I can see that by not taking a compete set of oestrogens, that the single oestrogen could imbalance the others - a bit like Vitamin B.

I’m sure most women prefer transdermals, which is great if they suit them, but I hope they don’t remove Premarin from the market because of the same kind of hype as the WHI study. I honestly believed it was unsafe but have completely changed my mind after reading this book.

Thank you for replies. I have been on Estrodot and Evorel for 12 years but never felt completely back to normal - maybe not possible - but was very interested in Dr Blums comments on Premarin and am going to see my gp to switch and see what happens . Always wondered why when we have more than one estrogen in our bodies that HRT contains only one.

My GP ( gynae specialist) said we had about 30 oestrogens if I remember. However as far as I know it is only estradiol that Premarin contains - that is the same as ours, and the rest are a mix of horse oestrogens - but I might be wrong about that! I think there is also a form of estrone which we do have - but it is unnecessary to take this as it exists in equilibrium with estradiol in our bodies and is converetd to and from it as I recall.

I have tried patches, gel and estradiol pills - none of them worked as well as Premarin. Calm, no brain fog, sleep well, no moodiness. I would urge anyone to try it
