HRT and periods
« on: December 27, 2018, 05:23:16 PM »

Hi ladies. I started low dose hrt patch six weeks ago, and also on progesterone two weeks of the month due to being peri-menopausal. My periods are still very, in fact scarily heavy, I pass huge clots and there's no sign of them easing off. I've tried tranexamic acid before in the past, but it didn't make any difference. I'm just back from seeing my gp, who's put me back on TA until he speaks to the local nurse at our hrt clinic tomorrow morning to see if this amount of bleeding is normal. Has anyone experienced this while on hrt, will my symptoms improve? It's that bad, I have to wear incontinence pads during the day and nappies at night. 😕

Hi and welcome to mm

Heavy bleeding in peri meno is quite common. You should probably have a scan to see if you have fibroids or polyps and also get more specialist advice.
It might be a good idea to have a Mirena fitted as this often helps control and reduce bleeding and keeps the womb lining thin. If you had the Mirena you could then have oestrogen as gel, patch or pills alongside to help with flushes.

I've always had heavy periods, thought by the age of 40 they would've eased off slightly. I've had the merina in twice, didn't work as I bled right the way through. Also had a multitude of scans/camera done as to begin with the docs thought I had fibroids. I have an area of thickened womb lining, but nothing that'd cause this amount of heaviness and pain. I've been discharged from gynie as now I'm peri, they think my symptoms are to do with that. I've had no flushes, or any other symptoms just that I missed two periods and my hormones dropped slightly on my last blood test.
