PH imbalance experiences and advice
« on: December 10, 2018, 04:46:29 PM »

Hi there,

I have been battling a PH imbalance for some time now.  Over the past 3 years I have managed this with varying degrees of success.  It seemed it started at the beginning of my peri-menopause journey as I was bleeding for almost 2 weeks of every moth and my periods became closer together.  I was also taking a lot of anti-biopics for UTI's, combine this with my hormonal changes and I have been battling ever since.  I get burning and itching, also burning urethra which gets worse throughout the day.  However no unusual discharge or odour (sorry TMI) I have temporary relief with Actigel, Vagifem and oral probiotics, and have even experienced weeks with no irritation at all, managing the flare ups as and when they happen.

I am currently experiencing a flare up which has now lasted a few weeks and feels like there is no end in sight.  This I feel was triggered by changing my HRT to Oestrogel and utrogestan and whilst I am getting used to it I am bleeding Alot again, also I had to have a course of antibiotics for a UTI which I hadn!t had to do for a while.  My specialist told me I needed probiotic suppositories which I have ordered, I know I could ask the doctor for antibiotics to get rid of the bad bacteria, but am really worried this will make things worse and get rid of all the good stuff to.

Has anyone else been battling this and managed to get it under control? Any advice would be really welcome, it is really impacting my wellbeing, and causing me anxiety.

By battling the ph I presume you mean your pH is too high and too alakaline? A healthy vaginal area will have low ph and this is what Vagifem aims to restore. if it's not low enough and you are getting repeated infections then maybe you need a higher dose of Vagifem although your systemic oestrogen should also be helping to some extent? I'm not expert on any of this but Maryjane and Dancinggirl may be able to help.

Have you looked at "The Burning Club" thread in Private Lives also?

Hope you find a solution soon and the bleeding abates....

Hi Emmapurple,

You may have a chronic embedded UTI ? If you google it and also professor Malone in London has useful information about them on his website as does Chronic UTI Australia.  Local estrogen can help. If you do not get on with vagifem, try the estring. Unfortunatey most women find that they get ups and downs with vaginal health at menopause. Try reading Jane Lewis's  book " Me and my menopausal vagina" it is on Amazon - lots of useful advice.

Good luck Pepperminty x
