Effects of vagifem?
« on: December 08, 2018, 05:12:55 PM »

Hi, I was referrred to the gynae clinic due to spotting issues which my doctor said was prob due to my va. I have been on vagifem for just over a year, using one pessary twice a week. The consultant I saw said the dosage wasn't enough and advised me to use two a night for the next 3 weeks and then two a night for two to three times a week. She examined me and said I had classic va, she has suggested I have a scan just to check my lining ( this was fine a year ago when I had a scan). I upped my vagifem last night but have today found I'm bleeding a bit. Could this be as a result of my examination, upping the vagifem or both? I'm a worrier and every time I see un expected bleeding I panic ( I have a history of miscarriages so I guess this stems from that) tia

I would think it's the examination having made an aggravated area already sore, worse.  It is bright blood?  Is it when you wipe, does it require a pad?

The skin can become very thin even with treatment.

Hi Nickyp   I can't advise on the spotting because I haven't had it but I am interested to read about the dosage recommended by your consultant. I haven't come across anyone being recommended to take 2 per night. I only started using vagifem 2-3 months ago but I am still meeting resistance from doctors to allow more than 1 Vagifem 2-3 times a week (after the initial 2 weeks).

That's interesting, now I'm worried I'm having too much of it! My doctor had said 1 twice a week, maybe the referral means I can have more. As fur the blood it's more brown than red, so old blood. Maybe the examination caused it.

I wouldn't worry too much. The consultant advised you to do this. My consultant (urogynaecologist) was happy for me to use them daily for a month but, when I took the prescription to my surgery, the pharmacist was unwilling to provide the recommended amount from the hospital. I have to wait to speak to a GP.

At the Chelsea & Westminster meno clinic I was told I could use Vagifem nightly and shove in 2 sometimes if I liked. GPs know nothing about it. Specialist gynaes are aware that 2 a week is under-dosing. At present I use Vagifem every night and I have an Estring as well.

Hi I am using vagifem 1 tablet every night as any less does not keep my symptoms under control. I have been doing this for 4 months now and my Gyny said that any more than every other night would need progesterone . My doctor said the same so I agreed to the progesterone but am not taking any yet .

The gynae gave me a repeat prescription to collect from the hospital pharmacy. Unfortunately she was new to the particular hospital and didn't know that the local health authority had blocked issue of Vagifem. I was told to take the prescription to the GP but haven't had any luck with that yet.

Years++ ago it was prescribed at 25. Now it's 10.  Some ladies find that they need 2 occasionally.  It's localised so don't worry too much!

I don't understand why some on here are using vagifem every night without mentioning progesterone, yet others are advised to take it.  Is this the same with ovestin. I'm worried and confused.

Also is it necessary to have breaks from using another there seems to be conflicting advise. Like katejo says, it's all very worrying.

Consultants  specialise in menopause treatments and should be up to date  in the latest guidelines.  GP's are not always as knowledgeable,  which is why they refer us to the specialists. Some people need this initial boost to start with before going onto a maintenance dose that suits them.

I saw a meno specialist when my VA was at its worst, she told me to use two Vagifem every night for two weeks and then either two every other night for another two weeks or I could use one daily.
That was just over two years ago and I have never managed on the normal prescribed dose and still use one each night. She did write to my GP and told him that even if used every day it's only equal to taking two systemic HRT tablets each year and quite safe to take long term with no break and no need for separate progesterone.
