Requesting hysterectomy
« on: January 20, 2019, 09:59:45 PM »

Hi ladies. I'm 40, and was diagnosed as perimenopausal in November of last year. I was put on to estradot patch and utrogestan 100, as I'm still menstruating, the hrt was more to help my moods as that's the only symptoms I've been getting, and a drop in hormones from my last blood test. After I had my last child 14 years ago, my periods became horrendously heavy and erratic, as well as spotting in between and abdominal cramps when I was no where near having my period. I've tried the pill, norethisterone, mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid as well as two Mirena coils, and all have failed at controlling flow, pain and regularity. I'm literally at the end of my tether with the pain I'm in as well as how heavy the flow is. Basically, I flood. I have to wear incontinence pads during the day and nappies at night because I bleed through normal sanitary towels so quickly. I can't wear tampons as the clots I pass are huge and push the tampons out. I've been to gynae, have been told I have an area of thickening of the lining of my womb, then that's it. Discharged. Can I request a hysterectomy, as I can't live my life like this anymore. I have to take days off work if I'm on my period because of the pain or heavyness. I once flooded and covered my work floor, which isn't very good when I work in a school kitchen.

Sounds horrendous!

It might help your case to keep returning to the GP to explain how it's impacting your quality of life. I was actually signed off work as the pain was pretty much continuous.
Have they found a cause of the bleeding and pain? If not, maybe more investigation could be done.

My understanding before my hysterectomy was I had to have tried, tablets then Mirena coil before being considered for surgery.
An ablation was offered but as it would not necessarily ‘cure' the pain, I asked to go straight for the hysterectomy.
My post op histology showed severe adenomyosis which is only cured by hysterectomy and the surgery was the best thing I did.

Don't give up  :)

Mirning ladies my hysterectomy was for all the same reasons your giving that was nearly 25 years ago and my gp I had then was young and so on the ball he had no hesitation when he saw how bad I was suffering plus I had a blood phobia, still do,so it was a no brainer for me.it was the best thing I did,it wasn't without complications but I soon healed and recovered and I've never regretted it.you have to think about your quality of life and base your decisions on that.good luckDD😘

I've been back many occasions to my gp and told them the impact this is having on me. I've been up for internal and external ultrasounds, as well as hysterscopy, that's where the thickening was discovered. They recon my periods are so heavy because I'm peri, but I've explained to them that I've been like this for years. I'm waiting to see the surgeons up at my local hospital for the pain, but I don't know if they're going to just dismiss me like gynae did. Because I live in a small town, we only have one hospital, so if I wanted a second opinion I'd have to go to Glasgow or Edinburgh which I couldn't afford to travel up to.

Hi SuzieD - I don't know what the referral route is in your case but please push for further proper investigation and treatment. Please follow up about the thickening of your womb lining after your hysteroscopy - did they take a sample for biopsy or have they said the thickening is OK ie part of your normal menstrual cycling?

One option rather than hysterectomy is an endometrial ablation - there are several members who have had this procedure and it is covered here: https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/periodtreatments.php and here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heavy-periods/treatment/ (scroll down).

One thing is clear - you can't go on like this from what you've said. Have a read about the ablation and if it appeals then I suggest you ask for this procedure if possible.

There are also some other NHS menopause clinics in Scotland, as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh and depends where you live. They can be found here: https://thebms.org.uk/find-a-menopause-specialist/

Hope this helps and please don't give up. If you get no joy then for £30, if you can afford it, you can write to Dr Currie for a specialist consultation and hope that her advice would be taken on board by your local doctors.

Sorry I can't be of more help and I hope you soon manage to find a solution to sort out your terrible bleeding problems.
