Our house is over 200years old. When we moved in 38yrs ago the only heat came from open fires and the aga in the kitchen. (flannels would freeze in the bathroom) Aga was kept going all year round for cooking and heating water (and reviving the odd half dead lamb in the bottom oven). We now have oil central heating together with open fires which are also designed to run downstairs radiators. Never have it on a timer, just turn it on when I get up. Our bedroom has never had the radiators turned on. Windows opened wide even in winter (last night wonderfully cold as a keen frost here). Not sure if it's the thickness of the walls but the rest of the house retains the heat pretty well overnight. Get through one fill of oil tank a year( 2300lit.)We have our own supply of logs for the fire (lots of fallen trees), we also supply MIL and son with logs for their log burners.

We have a similar system to annieb.  It is really good. This is the second winter we have had it. We heat the rooms we want to use and keep the others lower as they are all able to work independently. It has certainly made it more bearable and saved us money too even with the lounge being on all day from 6:30 till around 10:00 pm and we only need it set at 18 and no cavity walls in our old house

I keep curtains shut in the rooms we don't use if it's very cold.

We had a Wilson boiler which went in when the houses were built in 1969, lasted us until 1991.  This current 1 has been here since.  I would like to see properties built with a dual timing system for central heating.  We had this years ago, so that the timer and thermostat upstairs were independent to that downstairs.  The upstairs ones would kick in at 8.00 p.m. so bedrooms were warm at bed time.  Bathroom rad is the over-flow so was always on in the Winter.

Would save so much on heating costs!  Open fires drain the house of heat as 85% goes up the chimney. Since we had our wood burner 25% is lost.  The temp got up to 74 last night ........

Our thermostat is set at 20 at the minute so the heating didn't come on. It's 20.5 in the house.
