Prolapse
« on: October 15, 2018, 11:01:09 AM »

Good morning ladies
Can i just ask those ladies that have experienced prolapse ... what did your gps do ?  i ask  Only because ...last week i went to have a smear and my gp noticed that i was bleeding and that my cevix looked thin and inflamed . Also that there looked to be weaking of the cervix from the front and back.. a prolapse happening ..he said . Well i have had the most awful back ache and groin and leg pain so this might explain why . ( along with fibroids ) He told me to do some pelvic floor exercises and come back if they didnt work !! or i didnt feel better !
Should i be happy with this or should he have referred me ?? Really not sure how i feel apart from i cant put up with this back ache for much longer .🙁🙁

Hi Nellie Noo. The first thing I would say is that it is unusual for prolapse to cause really uncomfortable back ache. I've had prolapsed uterus (hysterectomy for this) plus prolapsed bladder (anterior wall repair) and they only caused me problems when they were far advanced and the consultant was adamant that backache was due to my (small) fibroids although even that he said wasn't proven. I would think the fibroids are more to blame to be honest.

As regards the prolapse. Yes, you should be referred to a specialist clinic for assessment. Most hospitals have a clinic or at least a specialist pelvic floor/continence nurse practitioner. You can google for your nearest clinic. Here you will undertake certain tests and be given a tailored set of pelvic floor exercises. The exercises can prevent prolapse from worsening but wont cure it. Are you on HRT? This tends to help your pelvic floor stay strong as it is the lack of oestrogen which can lead to prolapse. Did he say what exactly was prolapsing? There is more info about prolapse here https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/sexual-and-reproductive/pelvic-organ-prolapse

Thank you Taz2 for your kind and informed reply .
He didnt say what exactly was prolapsing apart from it all looks very weak down there and that the cervix was being pushed from the back and front 😳 He suggested i come off hrt as hrt can feed fibroids ... well im sorry im not coming off it !! I guess he is thinking that they are causing the back ache too .  He was very cavalier !!
I will need some help doing pelvic floor exercises as im one of those who just dont get what to do !! It all looks simple on the internet but i really cant feel these muscles ! So i think i will go back and as for a referral to a clinic . Thanks for the link ... very informative . Thank you x

That sounds a lot like my back aches....I don't know what causes yours but I have a tilted uterus. It tilts back and puts pressure on the nerves and such so causes some aching around there (oh my!!!...can't believe I didn't make that connection until writing you....Sorry, losing my mind a bit). The last doctor told me I had some prolapse happening like you describe but the current doctor didn't mention it so I need to ask him about it. (I have some distrust with the last doctor honestly and I'm not sure if he was completely honest with me about everything....he was pushing a hysterectomy). I can't say on the fibroid but I know depending on where it is growing and size, that can cause issues. Mine is on the front right near my bladder. But it is small and doesn't seem to bother me. (Might be different if the uterus was upright)

My uterus was tilted too - it's very common - but the only time it gave me problems was in the woman-on-top position. I didn't get back ache apart from in the last stages of labour which, I was told, was due to the position of the uterus.

I had a hysterectomy at 32 for total prolapse, the cervix was at the vaginal entrance too.  I had a retroverted uterus and during my heavy periods I had horrible aches and pains in my back, tummy and thighs

I had electric treatment first (sort of electric shocks to zap the muscles internally ) then a ring pessary that kept popping out as soon as I crouched then onto hysterectomy x

Thank you ladies for your comments.  Sparkle ... i am already on vagifem and hrt .. dread to think what my cervix would be like without it ! My fibroids are pretty much the size they were this time last year although one is at the back of the uterus and one on the outer right hand side.
Bluebutterfly .. gosh !yes ive a tilted womb too so yeah kind of makes sense . Sometimes the pain makes me feel sick ! Your doctor sounds a vague as mine !!
Gosh annie 0710 you sound like you have been theough the mill !!

Hi Nellie Noo. I was advised to do exercises and found them difficult too as didn't have much sensation but I have been persevering and it is getting better. Try quick pull ins (about ten) but make sure it is the front and not your “bum” that you are pulling in then try and hold for a count of as many as you can before you totally lose sensation ten more times. You will find the count gets longer the more you do it. Do this several times a day. Sitting down is very good and before you get out of bed too. When showering too although I can't master this one. Good luck

Nellie noo, yes, my pain is giving me a sick feeling as well. Currently in the midst of it. I wouldn't call it really painful but just very uncomfortable. I think the sick feeling bothers me the most. I'm guessing must be from the pressure on the nerves, and yes, having quite a heavy bleed right now. It's been so long since I've felt like this I had completely forgotten.
