Utrogestan vs mirena
« on: August 21, 2018, 10:23:07 AM »

I have been on oestrogen 4 pumps per day plus utrogestan 100mg for 7 days per month for about 3 years. I do NOT feel good on the utrogestan, although it's better than the Evorel sequi patches that I was on when I started on hrt (after 3 months I suddenly felt very depressed on the patch with the progesterone).

I have a non hormonal coil which needs removing, because it makes it difficult to do a uterine scan. Plus I'm 55 now and don't really need it for contraception!  I need to have this done under a GA because my cervix is stenosed and the threads have vanished. The consultant I have just seen has suggested replacing my coil with a mirena, as it will apparently give me a much lower dose of progesterone than the utrogestan. He's very much in favour of hrt and has made an appointment for me to have the existing coil removed, whilst leaving it up to me to consider the mirena. He said he would leave long strings on it so that it could be easily removed if it doesn't suit me.

Has anyone felt better with the mirena rather than utrogestan?

Thank you.

The Mirena with Oestrogel was the best HRt regime I ever had - and I tried just about everything due to premature meno.  I was very post meno when I had the Mirena and got some side effects in the first few weeks but once things had settled it was by far the least hassle of any other HRT. DG x

Love my Mirena and estrogel combo and I am the same age as you, I didn't get on with Utrogestan.

Thank you ladies.....that's a welcome surprise. Ive avoided the mirana until now because I assume that I'm not very tolerant of progesterone, but maybe it's worth a try.

Hi Trufflecat, I've been on exactly the same regime as you since December 2017 - I'm 42, peri menopausal and on HRT for osteopenia and severe PMS. I too struggle with the utrogestan and I'm having the mirena coil fitted tomorrow morning. I'm nervous about the fitting and whether it's going to suit me - I don't think I'm very tolerant of progesterone either. However I've decided it's worth a go.

Thanks Trufflecat! I've just got back from my appointment and the Dr couldn't insert it :(. Apparently my uterus is very backwards tilting and twisty and the insertion device bent when it went into my uterus. She's therefore referring me to a local hospital to have it inserted. I'm disappointed as went through the procedure (which was uncomfortable) to no avail. Plus taken day off work and kids with grandparents which might be more tricky for a future date. Never mind. I think I'll write a new post to see if anyone else has had similar issues x

Lucyloo - I think quite a few women have problems with the insertion of the Mirena. Personally I think they should always be fitted by a specialist who does it a lot.
The first time they tried to fit me with one, it was a locum doctor at the meno clinic, - he didn't read my notes so didn't know I hadn't had any HRT for 3 years(I was very post meno by then), so my uterus was very atrophied!!!  Needless to say he was unable to get it in and it was so painful I went blue and nearly fainted - he got quite panicked about it actually.  After I had had some oral and local oestrogen for a few months, the experienced doctor managed to fit it with few problems.   BTW were you advised to take a couple of Ibruprofen beforehand to ease any discomfort?  DG x

Thanks so much for your reply DG. I'm going to copy it and reply on the other thread in case other ladies have a similar issue and can read your reply x
