HRT aged 65
« on: July 09, 2018, 10:44:27 AM »

Good morning, I've just join this group and hope someone can help me
I'm 65 I've gone through the menopause but now I'm looking and feeling like I'm 75 not 65.... my skin is wrinkling as quickly as a prune, my skin is thinning too, I only have to knock my arms and I get a red bruise 😩 I've asked the Dr if I can to go on HRT but as my sister had Breast Cancer (she's free of it now) they won't subscribe me anything! I'm giving cream to help with dryness but to be honest I've lost my libido anyway... anyone else feel the same as me, if so did you get prescribed HRT or have I missed the bus! I hide my arms which used to be my best feature cos they look so horrible and wrinkled 😢

Hi gingernut65
Just to say  :welcomemm:
I know what you mean about your arms, I'm 53 nearly 54, and my arms
are starting to go wrinkly too, and I HATE it.
Sorry I can't give advice about hrt, but someone will respond with more knowledge
than me....

Take care, and welcome,

My Gynae told me that he has ladies in their late 70s and 80s still taking HRT, the rub on gel or a patch is considered the safer option.

Hi and welcome, Gingernut 65. You might get HRT but you will probably have to push for a referral to a menopause specialist (or even go private). If you have no uterus you should be OK for transdermal oestrogen as patch or gel. I'm not sure what the situation would be otherwise.

I had a hysterectomy years ago aged 47 and took oestrogen tablets afterwards until I was 53/54, at which point I moved house and the new GP refused to prescribe it. She was spooked by the flawed millennial studies which had so much publicity at the time. If I knew then what I know now I would have fought harder to stay on it. Last year at age 67 I asked to go back on HRT as I had developed atrophic vaginitis and also wanted to avoid osteoporosis, which my mother had. My current GP would only prescribe Tibolone, which was not really suitable at our age as transdermal is preferred. I managed to get a referral to a specialist clinic and they changed this to Oestrogel. I also use an Estring for VA. A specialist gynae might also prescribe testosterone gel to help with libido and energy levels.

I can't say the above regime has helped with the skin on my arms though, as it has suddenly started to become slack this year!

Think about why you want HRT, what symptoms you want to alleviate, and which age-related conditions you are hoping to avoid. It is not the elixir of youth (unfortunately!) but if you have a well thought out case you might get lucky.

Best wishes, and good luck.

Thankyou so much for your help, it's  really good to hear other people's points of view, I know my Heart says go for it and so does my husband and close friend,  but my head says “do you really want to take the risks associated with HRT” I suppose vanity also comes into it too! And the fact that I would like to enjoy a little bit of sex now and again 😱
I have decided that I'm  going to make an appt with a private Dr who deals with HRT and get her opinion before I put this to bed altogether! I know it's no use going back to my own Drs as they have said no in the past..  thankyou once again

Hi Gingernut65

 :welcomemm:

Re starting HRT over 60 - I think a lot depends on when you went through menopause. Ideally HRT shold be started within 5 years of menopause although within 10 years and under 60 is deeemed to be "the window of opportunity" in terms of cardiovascular risk. Wrinkled skin would not be a reason for docs to prescribe this - and it is normal at 65!

However if you are having debilitating symptoms then a doc would look at your general health and any risk factors (too much body fat ie  high BMI, smoker, diet, lifestyle, exercise etc) and see if it might be possible to start a very low dose to improve your quality of life. Breast cancer in a close relative might also be a factor especially if she ahd this while young. If HRT is prescribed then a low dose transdermal patch would be the least risky - but the problem is  often with the progestogen part of hRT so if you don't want a bleed then youhave to take this all the time which can lead to side effects.

I have no idea what a private doc will suggest in your position but good luck anyway - and let us know! :)

If you have no vasomotor symptoms and your sister had breast cancer, I think you'll be hard pushed to find a consultant to prescibe HRT to you.

As Hurdity said, your skin issues are very much to be expected at 65.
