Hrt ?.& gallbladder trouble
« on: June 05, 2018, 08:31:52 PM »

Hi,
Just curious,
I have had gut trouble for the last 4 years or so, all sort of ‘diagnosis ibs, gastritis, ulcer etc etc.
Started HRT about 8 weeks ago - initially all the gut trouble went , until it came back about 2weeks later in a different form🐲now it is acute central grip pain, nausea and salivating sometimes sick. It happens randomly for no reason, thankfully not very often.
I read somewhere that as oestrogen drops , so does bile production, so if i am om Hrt ergo i must be producing more bile.
So... anyone out there know if this will pass as my body gets used to more bile- or is it more likely, knowing my luck, to carry on until removed?

Sorry to hear about your gut problems  Sgtvhilts.

If you are taking tablet HRT then this could be a reaction to that and I would suggest trying a transdermal type - which is recommended for those who have problems with oral HRT:

https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/route.php

 Indications for non-tablet route.

    Individual preference.
Poor symptom control with tablet HRT.
Side effects such as nausea with tablet.
Bowel disorder which may affect absorption of tablet therapy.
History of migraine (when steadier hormone levels which may be achieved with a patch may be beneficial).
Lactose sensitivity (all tablet preparations of HRT contain lactose).
    History of gallstones.
Current use of medications such as anti-epileptic medication which may interfere with the break-down of tablet HRT.
    Variable blood pressure.
    High triglyceride levels.
Risk factors including Body Mass Index greater than 30, family history or past history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolus, after full discussion and specialist advice when necessary.

In any case if you are getting recurrent abdominal pain, nausea and sickness even if it is the tablet hRT ( if you are on this) I would consult your doctor - unless you have had very recent investigations which rule out anything other than the diagnoses you have already had.

Sorry I can't help re the oestrogen and bile - I haven't looked into this.

Hope you feel better soon - but do get checked out and let us know the outcome.

Hi there!

Sorry to hear you've been have tummy troubles and it could be gallbladder related. Unfortunately gb issues can be related to female hormones, it's very common in pregnant and meno ladies, especially if you happen to be carrying a few extra pounds :( . Although being on hrt should help in fact it can be a factor which is annoying!

I've been there and got the t-shirt, the good bit was dropping 10kg on a low fat diet, bad bit was never knowing when you'd get an attack. So, try a low fat diet, eat lots of liver cleansing foods (red grapes are good for this!), try a patch hrt and just monitor yourself. Ask the doc for an ultrasound as this can tell you if you have stones or if your gb wall is thickened. Problem is either a small stone can escape into the bile duct or if the wall is stiff it's harder to squirt the bile out. Therefore the less fat you eat the less the gb has to work.

I wouldn't wish gb problems on any one so I hope you can get some investigations done and determine whether it is that or not. Good luck!!
