Early menopause, please help
« on: April 11, 2018, 03:53:23 PM »

Hi, I have just turned 36 and found out that there is a strong history of early menopause in my family, nan, aunt, mum, auntie and cousin. Found this out at Xmas and had some blood tests done, fsh was 8.8, lh was 8.9. Then I saw a different doc and she suggested I come off pill (destrogel) and have my amh tested. So eight weeks since stopping pill and test done last week. Results have come in today saying my amh is 'less than 1' which she says is very low and wants me to come in to discuss starting hrt. So confused as why are my fsh and lh numbers fine and amh so low? Not sure if my pill made my fsh artificially low and are actually much higher now that I'm off the pill!? Really confused and upset, for one because no one in my family told me about this earlier and two we were thinking about trying for our second child soon. Sorry for long post x

Hi and welcome to MM Vicki
I had exactly the same thing happen to me in my mid 30s. My mum and gran both had POF and didn't mention this to me.
Since you came off the BCP have you had any periods? Are you getting flushes or other meno symptoms?  A high FSH is the indication for menopause.
Re wanting another baby, I would ask to be referred to a specialist to really find out what is going on before attempting any hormonal treatment.
Do read up all the factual info on this site to get clued up.
I am a bit confused about the tests you've had done - what on earth is a amh test???? Blood tests are notoriously unreliable for menopause so maybe your GP is seeing a different picture?
Anyway, at least you are getting a diagnosis and at your age there are BCPs that have bioindentical oestrogen which may be appropriate for you - e.g. Qlaira - do ask your doctor about this if you are not going to try for a baby. There are many HRT options as well so look under TREATMENTS on this site.
Keep us posted. DG x

Hi, yes have had symptoms, that's the reason it all came out with my mum as I was moaning about the flushes etc. It has all seemed to die down a bit lately but still not sleeping, dry, mood swings etc. Amh is anti mullerian hormone, a test that shows your ovarian reserve. Had a very light bleed, I mean hardly a bleed at all really over a day. That's it.

Ahh! Thank you for clarifying. I'm afraid it doesn't sound good for your wish to have another child but you do need specialist advice about this. I was lucky as I had my 2 babies but only just in time. My peri meno symptoms started just after I had my second baby aged 33 and I was diagnosed as menopausal at 36!!!
Do look at the website:  daisynetwork,  as this is specifically for POF and there may be more specific advice and support for you there. There is a section on this site with info on POF as well.
I know this is very tough for you so do keep posting - POF is far more common than many think. We get women in their  twenties going through POF coming to this forum in a very confused and frightened state.
You will need HRT to protect your heart and bones for the long term and local vaginal oestrogen is often needed, alongside full systemic HRT, to treat and prevent urogenital atrophy.
Ask your GP for a referral to a specialist gynae for proper support and advice. Do let us know how you get on.  DG x

I was in very early stages of perimenopause when I had my 3rd child. I was 43, I am 54 now. I didn't plan on having a 3rd as I already had 19 & 17 year old at the time. I thought because I was in early meno it would be virtually impossible but it happened so there is hope

Thank you for replies, it has all happened so suddenly that it's got me in a right mess. Had some more blood taken now I'm off pill and have docs on Thursday and am going to ask to be referred before agreeing to hrt. Xx
