Mirena and natural cycle
« on: April 01, 2018, 06:05:21 PM »

Hi ladies
I have had a mirena coil for nearly 2 years unfortunately I haven't been one of the lucky ones who's periods have stopped and I've had alot of light bleeding. Often starting with a period then carrying on for weeks, recently things seemed to have settled down I don't have the prolonged bleeding just 3 days of light bleeding then nothing. But since Christmas I've been having these 3 day bleeds every 2 weeks, although the bleeding is very light it is accompanied by cramps and pms symptoms.
So I'm wondering if this is my natural cycle or a side effect of the mirena? If it is a side effect I might consider having it removed as I'm getting exhausted with all the pms

Jinja - I wouldn't have the Mirena removed - if it's been predominantly good over the last 2 years and it's only recently you've had issues, you may find things are worse if you have it removed. The cramps and PMS may be more peri meno symptoms. You don't say how old you are but I suspect you are peri meno so your bleeds will be erratic as your oestrogen levels will be fluctuating and this would explain the PMS.  The Mirena can be good because it will reduce problematic bleeding ( without it you may have been getting more prolonged and erratic bleeds) and if you do develop flushes, night sweats and other menopause symptoms you can simply add in some oestrogen to control these symptoms.
Hopefully things will settle but perhaps you should consider adding in a little oestrogen as gel or patch - just a low dose at first - to see if this improves the PMS.  DG x

Thanks for the reply dancinggirl, I'm 46 and I've been on oestrogen for 2 years aswell, first oestrogen and now everol 100 and testogel. Just so fed up seem to have one good week then back to PMS symptoms, low mood irritability etc it's just draining me at the minute
I was really hoping the high oestrogen would override my cycle. Had a oestradiol test done a couple of weeks ago and it was 925 so I'm absorbing it ok

Ahhh! So you're being treated for hormonal issues??? Is it bad PMT you suffer from?
I'm not surprised your are getting some bleeding with such a high dose of oestrogen. Even the Mirena will struggle to keep the womb lining thin at that high level.
If you are still struggling with the PMT then you need to talk with your gynaecologist about what you should do now.
There is a drug that can shut down your cycle - I think it is Zoladex ( or something similar) and then you could have a lower dose of oestrogen that may give you a better balance.
Hopefully Hurdity will be along soon as she may offer more detailed advice about this as she has a science background.
