Tranexemic acid *while on a patch* - is this okay?
« on: March 09, 2018, 09:47:29 PM »

(I know someone else is posting about Tranexemic acid right now, but I didn't want to interrupt her thread...)

I'm 43, 4 years post-meno due to POF. I still have a uterus and one ovary, but my ovary is non-functional, I use an estradiol patch + take Utrogestan or Crinone every other month for 14 days if I haven't bled recently.

I have been having an epic unscheduled bleed, going on 6 weeks now. I tried to go on Yaz as HRT last week to see if it could help control my bleeding, it totally stopped my bleeding for about 5 days, but I felt awful, had to stop it due to side-effects.

My doc says that my lining is not building up right now, it's just bleeding and not thickening. So I am back on a a 0.1mg estradiol patch, and my doc just added Tranexemic acid. So I googled it and it's like "don't use with a patch!!" and now I am freaked out. He told me it's okay in this case, but I'm wigged out. I should step away from Dr. Google, probably...

But I'm also flooding with terrible cramps and clots, ugh. This is awful. Of course I'm about to travel, too.  ::)

Has anyone gone on tranexemic acid while on a patch to get through a bad bleed?

Hi hoping4best - I'm sorry I have no experience of this but in the absence of anyone with experience replying (it is the weekend after all!) I will at least make a comment (from ignorance though!).

Firstly I looked up the SPC (product info) for tranexamic acid and no mention was made of oestrogen patches or HRT as an interaction to be cautious of, so presumably it's fine and especially if you have been prescribed it by your GP or specialist? Where did you find the info saying it should not be taken with a patch?

The main thing to make sure about is that there is no untoward reason for your heavy bleeding - so I presume it's OK in the short term but if you're peri-menopausal and the very heavy bleeding continues - perhaps this should be investigated rather than (or in addition to) just keeping on taking tabs to slow the bleeding.

Are you off somewhere interesting - holiday? Whatever the reason you don't want it marred by clots!

Thanks Hurdity!

I did find “Don't combine with birth control or estradiol patches” warnings on online drug interactions checkers. I'm post-menopausal due to ovarian failure, so my endocrinologist did say it was ok for me to take them together.

I have been scanned and he believes my bleeding is due to my lining not building up. It's unstable and just bleeding, without a progesterone trigger (it's very thin).

My update is that the tranexmic acid (generic Lysteda in the states) has helped a lot! My bleeding is almost stopped and I had a lovely holiday trip! Very few, barely noticeable side effects. Next step is when the spotting has stopped, I stop the tranexmic acid and see if I can go back to my normal non-bleeding state.

Thank you again!

Glad you bleeding has slowed and you enjoyed your holiday trip :). Hopefully the bleeding will settle in the absence of the tranexamic acid.
