Suffering on levonorgestrel - don't know what to do.
« on: November 19, 2017, 05:27:10 PM »

Having given up on Utrogestan due to horrible side effects I'm now getting exactly the same on Levonorgestrel (FemSeven) - awful anxiety, insomnia, constant nausea and diarrhea. Only been on it since Friday and I'm on the verge of giving up. But I suspect they're all going to have this effect initially - antidepressants also give me terrible anxiety to start with, so I've never managed to stay on one long enough to find out if it would help. So I'm wondering if I should stick with it and go and get beta-blockers or diazepam to deal with the anxiety, and see if my system gets used to it after a while. Anyone else had this dilemma?

Hi racjen - I just answered your other post about oestrogen levels. Sorry to hear about the Femseven - I wasn't aware that transdermal prog could cause nausea and upset bowels like this although I know our hormones do affect our digestive system and women are more prone to IBS than men. How very frustrating for you.

Sorry I can't remember how old you are - but oestrogen replacement is better for your overall health now and in the future than beta-blockers (which reduce blood pressure so could result in other problems) or diazepam (which can be very addictive if used regularly) if you can only find a prog regime to suit you!

I also can't remember what frequency of prog you have been given - presumably not conti if you are intolerant? Is it possible to get referred to a specialist so that you can maybe take a reduce dose/longer cycle under supervision, which would keep the prog to a minimum - unless you have to take it all the time due to endometriosis? Yes perhaps see if your system gets used to it

I don't like progesterone - but take it vaginally on a long cycle (6-8) weeks) which is tolerable, The rest of the time I am blissfully prog free!

Sorry I can't be more helpful or encouraging but hopefully other Femseven or Mirena ( same prog) users will be along to give their experience?

Hi Hurdity,

I didn't mean give up on the oestrogen (I know that makesme feel better), I meant the dilemma was whether to stick with this progesterone for a while and take other drugs alongside it to deal with the acute anxiety, or try another progesterone in the hope it suits me better. I suspect I'm going to react like this to all of them initially, it seems that my brain protests at first when any mood-altering substance is introduced, but maybe it'll settle down over time.

Having said that, today the anxiety has mostly gone and been replaced by a zombie-like fatigue - don't know which is worse. I'm seeing Dr. Gray next week so will attempt to stick it out till then...
