HRT & menopause
« on: November 02, 2017, 01:35:15 PM »

Hi. I am new to this forum but have joined because I desperately need some advice. I am perimenopausal and am on HRT. Initially I was on Femiston 1/10 (after reading this forum & pursuading the doctor that this is more bioidentical progesterone), but I was finding that my mood was very low during the 2 weeks of the progesterone, so we increased to the 2/10. This helped but as time went on I was getting the low moods and depression again.
At this point I met my current partner & when looking into getting a coil fitted as contraception, the gp suggested a Mirena coil could be used as the progesterone side of the HRT & because it's localized to the uterus it should have less  overall effects than the tablets. So I had a Mirena coil fitted and was put on 75micrograms oestradiol patches. BUT I have noticed my mood has gone down to rock bottom, I'm crying all the time, have no energy or will to do anything & have withdrawn into myself. I have been off work for nearly 2 weeks now. I have just pursuaded the doctor to increase the patches to 100mgs, but am worried that I will still be the same. I believe that this is the maximum that the patches can go, so is there anyway that the oestrogen can be topped up with oestrogen cream or pressies? I think I am progesterone intolerant as when I was on the pill the gp put me on the progesterone only mini pill & that was just awful, with similar symptoms that I'm getting now. Have I had/got PMDD? I feel like the gp is not helping me at all & not listening but I can't carry on like this, this is no life!

Thank you for listening.  :'(

Hi Micha10a

I had to have the mirena coil removed for exactly the same reasons as you.  Although I did persevere with it for 6 months.  I knew I'd made the right decision for me as within 48 hours I was back to my old self.

Hopefully increasing the oestrogen will help but if not at least you have the option of having the mirena removed.  Hope you feel better soon x

Hi micha10a,

I have been going through some awful times over the last 12-18months and put down to perimenopause my gp wont give me hrt siting stroke risk. I have had two coils in past and just had the moods at period time, had another put in middke of this year and awful headaches and moods so removed it. I began using clue and migraine app so i could track all my symptoms and started to notice a pattern with ovulation and periods.
I paid to see a menopause specialist as other gynae's just treated me for pain and nothing else.

He told me pmdd or hormonal imbalance and hrt will not work....read prof john stubb also.

My specialist has advised me to have zoladex with adding in tibolone and if this takes away symptons then full hysterectomy
Drastic i know but he advises hrt will not work and also prof john stubb article advises if the highest dose of hrt doesnt work then injections but you cant do long term.

I know i am perimenopausal but pmt gets worse leading up to menopause and i cant carry this on for next 10 years as my periods are still pretty regular, i am 43.

At my gp on 15th for the start of that journey and fingers crossed i get sone relief.

All the best

Hi Mazza 27,

I do feel for you, it's an awful place to be and you feel like no-one will help you. I am starting to feel a bit better on the 100mcgs patch, but it's early days yet. I do hope that you can sort things out for yourself, but keep persevering until you do. I'm afraid sometimes we have to make a nuisance of ourselves to be heard.

Good luck
