Mum
« on: November 01, 2017, 04:49:05 PM »

Hello ladies I can really do with a bit of reassurance am worrying about my mum. Shes 90 and has been in hospital for a while now as she was admitted with confusion and is normally of sound mind for her age with an excellent memory, Dr diagnosed a UTI and treated her for that, he also kept her in longer than usual as she does  not eat well and tends to get dehydrated. I noticed a while back that there was a tube of Premarin vaginal cream that she was being treated with, over the past 10 days. I am unsure why, perhaps due to the catheter being in place. The Dr treating mum  has today informed me that she has started with vaginal bleeding, he has done a scan and there was a fair amount of fluid in the uterus, he will be getting a specialist gynaecologist to give his opinion, it just seems very co incidental, could it be caused by the vaginal estrogen cream, any thoughts on this?  I am thinking all sorts of unpleasant thoughts as to why now after all these years, as mum went through meno at the normal age, and am hoping that its just due to the added estrogen after all these years, could vaginal estrogen cause a bit of bleeding, any idea? I have to now wait to hear what the gynaecologist says once he has seen her.  :'(

I expect the oestrogen cream was used to help with the atrophy but I believe it is highly unlikely that it would cause a build up in the womb and cause bleeding the dose is so small. At her age there can be so many reasons for the bleeding.
Utis in the elderly does cause confusion, dizziness etc. Keeping them hydrated is the toughest thing.
Hopefully they can stabalise her soon. DG x

Atrophy can cause vaginal bleeding if severe, topical estrogen wouldn't be the cause of it.
My mum had a serious uti earlier this year and was very confused, but was better once the antibiotics kicked in.
She needs to be encouraged to drink enough when she is discharged from the hospital, I have to nag my mother on that one!

I don't think that in that small amount of time Cassie that any localised HRT treatment would cause internal bleeding.

At least the Doctor caring for your Mum has asked for an appropriate consult rather than sending her home so that she would then have to wait and undergo further travelling.

Could you be there when the Gynaecologist speaks to your Mum?  Has she improved in general with her current treatment?
