It it now considered ok to be on hrt for life please?
« on: July 27, 2017, 12:23:24 AM »

I'm addicted to valium again, got a lot off stress, but I have a legit script and am tapering, asa I have dual diagnosis, drug problems and2 mental health diagnoses.
My GP wants  me off hrt next year.
I was taking it sequentially, estradiol patch 100mcg daily and utroggestan 200mg 12 days per month, but once i got addicted to valium, as progesterone acts on same receptors as valium, GABAA, I found that for most of the 16 days without the utro, I was going absolutely loopy and couldnt understand why until I put 2+2 together and realised it was because the progesterone acts on same receptors and I was effectively stopping it once per month. As soon as I went onto it daily, my mental state stabilised a lot, even though I halved the dose to 100mg. My cpn nurse even commented, its because the daily utro meant more stable gabaa levels.
Anyway, I am scared that when the doc takes me off the progesterone as well as the oestrogen, as you cannot taper the micronised progesterone, Iam scared that it will be like taking a huge valium cut, as you are only meant to taper valium very slowly.
I am really scared that stopping the utro will send me loopy.
thanks for reading, any advice, ps womb lining ok, had ultrasound last year, no mention of thickening, plus I get reassuring little bleeds every few months so im not worried about my womb.

So long as no real health reasons not to , it is up to us if we want to stay on it  for life .

Why Joan Collins and the likes are doing so well .

Dr said because I will have been on it five years and they don't want you on it longer than that but I still very much need it. Worried what coming off micronized progesterone will do as I cannot taper.

In the NICE guidelines somewhere.

If you are on face book , I follow a page called " my menopause doctor" she is a
UK GP/ HRT specialist who somewhere on her page it says you can stay on it for as long as YOU like , as per Mr Nick Panay at a recent conference, reaffirming the guidelines which by the sounds of it your GP has not read. 😏

I've been on it since 32, now nearly 51.  My old surgery wanted me off it when I was 40 because I'd been on it 'too long', I told them I'll take the risks, I'm not coming off it!

I did say to one doctor, "my body, my choice" but she wasn't having it. I said hrt makes life worth living and she said she didn't want to make life bad but there were risks. I said, I'd rather run the risks but still struggled.
Last year another doctor said he would review me next year but I will just say that I tried reducing the patch to 75mcg and it was horrible.
It takes me weeks to recover when I go back up in dose.

There's research papers I'm sure (if you google) saying hrt is safe and it's recommended up to 60, if the patient wishes to choose hrt

They're doing you an injustice because it's known to protect heart and bones too isn't it ?

I know women older than 60 who get bad flushes and need high dose hrt.

Well yeah we read about it on here don't we? I know it's been said hrt to at least natural menopause age but really, there's a lot of ladies carrying on with it way beyond that, I asked at a gynae appt and he said as long as there's no other reason like health concerns o can stay on it for life.  Surely, our life, our choice as long as we're being sensible

A general opinion only.  My mother was on Premarin at 100, but, and a very big but, she had a hysterectomy in her fifties.  My personal belief is that we are replacing something that we need and evolution has not caught up with our increased life expectancy.  As in everything medical, your personal history is all important and your physician's knowledge and biases will play an important role.  I would ask the experts, the most obvious being Dr. Currie, and also menopause clinics.  In the US, it is mostly a personal decision.  Every gynae I've been to, at least six, have said they will have a patch on them when they are buried.  But, again, personal medical history.
True. Congrats to your mother for making it to 100
