bio identical hormones for perimenopause
« on: June 28, 2017, 10:34:11 AM »

Hi please can anyone help with some info? i am 51, having regular periods every 26 days, have never missed a period, have suffered hormonal migraines for 30 years, migraine that lasts for 3 days& nights, a few days before my period & then again when period starts to ease off, i take zolmatriptan for them, but i have really struggled not  only with the frequency of these migraines, but the emotional side of the hormones (or lack of them!) i get very teary, crying at work, unable to make decisions , a total lack of confidence, a flat feeling that i can't get out of, usually a week -10 days before my period starts, until i start to feel better around day 7 of my period, with hot at night, sore nipples, restless legs, i then feel normal and quite bright & bubbly (which i am like), i haven't ever been on the pill, but i had to take progesterone for a few days to hold off a period whilst camping, when i stopped taking it my period started to come and i was an emotional wreck, non stop crying all day at work, my brain didn't work, it was as bad as the postnatal depression i had 16 years ago, the dr who told me to take it wasn't interested.  i have been to chelsea &  westminster hospital, they are treating me as PMT rather than perimenopause  as i still have periods, and have recommended to have 100mcg patch of estradol everyday  & 100 mcg of progesterone as pessary on days 17-28, (this seems a high dose of both hormones?) will it make me feel really poorly as before as i seem to be progesterone intolerant, anyone used this before, i haven't had hormones before, I'm scared of more migraines & fluctuating moods  please help!

Welcome to MM masterchef
100mg Utrogestan is actually a half dose for the sequential regime you have been prescribed - so not a high dose at all. You have been adviced to use the Utrogestan as a pessary directly into the vagina so less will be absorbed around your body and should therefore give fewer side effects. You have been given a high dose of oestrogen and I assume this is to help control the hormone related headaches and pmt.
You are clearly getting some good specialist advice and these bio identical hormones are known to be helpful for many hormonal imbalances.
Do go ahead and try what you have been prescribed as it may well help.
I am certainly no expert on these things - however I had a premature meno so have been on and off HRT for over25 years. I have seen big changes and improvements in the treatment of hormonal problems but it is still trial and error. Quality of life is important and at your age, and with your past history, you will undoubtedly need some help through the menopause journey.
Keep an open mind, don't look for problems as this regime may well help a great deal. Keep us posted.DG x

Hi
I have always been terrible with any hormones all my life bit I find taking the utrogesterone vaginally is def the best way. Dont panic at first it makes u really sleepy etc and give it a few months to settle . Hope it really works for u. I have had 6 different types of hrt and this regime while still not perfect is the best. Good luck xx
