Should I Try a Stronger HRT?
« on: June 21, 2017, 03:50:52 PM »

Hi, I'm 49 (still having periods) and I've been on HRT for about a year to relieve perimenopausal symptoms (night sweats and what I can only describe as cognitive impairment).  I started on evorel sequi 50 patches and then femoston 1/10, which have helped to some extent however my night sweats have returned (no, it's not just the weather) and my brain still does not function nearly as well as it used to! I'm trying to apply for new jobs and feel I'm really disadvantaged by my terrible memory and seeming lack of ability to absorb/retain information!  I'm wondering whether I could do with a stronger version.  When my hormone levels were tested before starting HRT (over a year ago) they showed the following:
serum FSH 32.8 iu/L (I think this is high)
serum LH 15.9 iu/L (relatively normal)
I've put this in just in case anyone knows more about these and if they give any indication of what strength of HRT would be suitable?

One issue my GP was concerned about with prescribing me HRT in the first place was my focal migraines - I was getting more of these most likely as a result of fluctuating hormones as I don't get these so much now, however I do get migraines fairly frequently (just about every weekend) without visual effects.  In support of HRT there's a family history of osteoporosis (and none of breast cancer).

I've tried to put a lot of detail in the hope someone who knows about HRT might be able to advise me on this.

Thanks! :)

Hi Flossie, welcome to the forum - sorry you haven't had any responses - I don't know a great amount about HRT other than what I take (Elleste Duet) so am not sure what your levels actually mean.  Even tho you do get the headaches, you can take HRT but it might be better to see one of the menopause specialists recommended on this site (thats what I did) as they know a lot more than the GP's.  I am similar age to you and did get regular periods but the night sweats were causing me a lot of grief hence going onto HRT (plus the memory loss/concentration holes).

Am sure somebody will be along soon - keep posting

Thanks SP - where in the forum will I find the specialists info (not sure I could afford to go private though)?

Hi Flossiepuffs,
I'm no expert, but I would think if your symptoms have returned, you might well need a stronger dose, or a different HRT.
Also the fact that you are still having periods could indicate that your own hormones are also playing apart in your symptoms.

Hope this helps

Hi Shortie,

Actually I was getting focal migraines before starting HRT - the thinking was that they were worse due to fluctuating hormones.  Once I started HRT didn't notice a pattern with them coinciding with the progresterone bit.  In fact they did tail off a bit and seem to have started up again, so I'm thinking the stronger HRT might help.  But I will definitely consider what you've said about utrogestan and will check if there is a pattern I've not picked up on!
