Hello everyone,

Having been an avid reader of MM for some time, I've taken the plunge and joined.

I was an early starter to menopause. Peri menopause from the age of 36 and 12 years of heavy and painful periods.

Over the last 5 years, I've had awful night sweats.  Since July 2015, I've not had a period. (Utter bliss) I've started a course of Kliofem and only 5 days left to sticking at it for the last 23 days.

I've had painful cramps, not heavy bleeding, but a loss and back to wearing sanitary towels.

I'm usually an even tempered and fairly robust character and can handle stress with work quite well. Overall general health is good and I'm 49 years of age. I'm of good weight (10 stone) have no underlying conditions  and content.

Since taking the HRT, I appear to be having tearful episodes and having a discussion with my husband this morning, (him stating he's never seen me like this previously) it's become apparent that my temperament has been affected.

I'm prepared to stick with this course, and hoping that some gentle exercise, fresh air will lift my mood.

What a lovely forum of women supporting each other. I look forward to reading more and engaging with other women experiencing menopause and all this entails.

Hi Daisy,

Great to connect.

My husband has been understanding and I think it's quite shocked him that his even tempered wife is now snappy, tearful and wants to bury her head under the duvet.

Not forgetting that while all of this is new to me, it's also new to him.

I'm still learning all about HRT. I was sterilised at 29, so have not used the pill for 20 years. I got used to heavy & painful periods and managed to negotiate my way through the pain with dog walking. Largely difficult while sitting in my office, but I work in a large building and our kitchen is a fair walk from our office so movement during the day was easy.

Looking back, and I'm guessing I'm post-menopausal now as no periods since July 15, I've been happy to put up with night sweats as a swap for the heavy periods. I did have a scan in 2015 as I'd had large clots over a matter of months and was told I had a *bulky* uterus. (Charming) I know I have two fibroids also. But understand they shrink as we age and there was no need for any treatment of them.

I guess, reading some experiences, I've got off quite lightly. I took myself to bed this afternoon after a dog walk, as I feel utterly wiped out. Bed in the afternoon is a foreign concept to me.

I'm hoping, Daisy, I don't have to change my prescription, it's still early days. My husband suggested coming off them (although I think that was more for him than a sensible piece of advice) but I'll keep going and monitor things so I've got a good handle on things for my follow up GP appointment in April.

It's a lovely place-I've enjoyed reading the forums.

Hi TraceyMc

Welcome to the forum.

Bleeding during the first six months of hrt is common but should settle down.
You have however been prescribed a higher dose of hrt. Generally hrt is prescribed at a low dose first and if that doesn't help control symptoms the dose can be increased upwards. If you look under the treatment bar at the top of the page this gives details of all the various treatment options

Also the progesterone in kliofem is Norethisterone and seems to be the least tolerated progesterone on the forum quite a few ladies find this can cause some of the side effects you have mentioned.

If things haven't settled down by April it might worth considering changing to another type of tablet.

I cann't recommend this personally as I haven't used it but Femoston might be a good one to try  a lot of ladies on here recommend it. The progesterone in this tablet is different and seems  to be well tolerated with less side effects.

Hello Tracey
I'm no great expert but have been taking Femoston for five weeks and can say that the progesterone weeks were mostly fine, if you did decide to swap pills after a bit. Welcome to the circus!

Hi TraceyMc

 :welcomemm: from me too.

I agree with Lanzalover re the type of HRT you have been given.

You will see from the sound of it that ancient runner has been given a cyclical HRT ( I think!). This means that you only take the progestogen for half the month so more like normal periods, rather than all the time. Several of us have opted to remain on a cycle (even into our 60's) because we don't like the effect of continuous progestogens.

Of the combi tablet HRTs Femoston is the best tolerated ( judging by the experiences of women on here) if you are at all sensitive to synthetic progestogens.

Let us know how you get on :)

Hi Tracy- I'm a newbie too so welcome x
I'm on my 3rd different lot of HRT and been on it since October 2015. Feeling increasingly worse, back and forward to GP with a growing suspicion that progesterone was the culprit. Lo and behold, found out through the site and forum that the progesterone used in all 3 types of HRT was exactly the same and I may be able to tolerate a different type. GP not really prepared to listen so I'm off to see a specialist next week.
Try giving it a wee while but if your symptoms continue get back to the doc and suggest a change. Be firm- I know it's hard when you're feeling so crap. I wasn't and I let them brush me off time and time again and now feeling much worse as a result. Take control- you can do it x

Hi Lanzalover,

Thank you very much for your informed response.  That's so helpful to know I've been prescribed a high dose as a first-time user. I'll ask my GP on this. Incidentally, it was my GP whom recommended this site and the forum.

Since Saturday, bleeding & cramps have increased and I've felt quite poorly.  Some self-care has been needed and I'm quite resourceful in this. (I work with vulnerable women and never has there been a better time to practice what I preach)

Bleeding is now flooding with new pads every hour. That's particularly nasty right now.

I'll take on board what you're saying.  I really appreciate your advice. TY

Hi Rebecca,

I clench my jaw when stressed or concentrating on something. The jaw clenching produces similar symptoms to those you describe, and by coincidence I also get it only on the left side. I also used to grind my teeth at night. Could it be either of these? Menopause is stressful enough at the best of times!
