Very Heavy Bleeding after Mirena Removal
« on: January 29, 2017, 11:17:26 AM »

I had my mirena removed on Wednesday last week and have had VERY heavy bleeding since Friday. No cramping, just heavy bleeding. Is this just a normal withdrawal bleed? Any experiences would be appreciated. The doc who removed it said "we just don't know what will happen now" when I asked what to expect.

Hi murphy!

No expert here, but I guess this is the expected withdrawal bleed. Don't worry. When you had normal periods, were they heavy like this one? As my previous gynae used to say, bleeding is cleansing!

Thanks Menomale - I think you're right, it does feel like cleansing. No my periods weren't this heavy but I'm wondering if the mirena was just a bit too much with my low E reading.

If things don't settle within the next 7 days then get back to the GP.  DG x

Thanks DG - I'm really very concerned as never had bleeding like this before.

Where are you in menopause murphydurf? It would be surprising to have a heavy bleed if you are post-menopausal and have only been using a 25 mcg patch? Sorry can't remember. This sounds like you have definitely lining to shed (following withdrawal of the progoestogen) irrespective of your systemic reading ( and as we know these are not accurate). What it actually indicates depends on your history (re oestrogen) and menopausal state

However I agree with Dancinggirl - if you are worried - then do go to your doc. Don't you see Prof Studd? I would ask him!
