illness and disease?

A Consultant gynaecologist on the radio this morning was talking about fertility problems as being a disease?  So they need treatment under the NHS rather than Private Clinics.

So what constitutes diseases as opposed to an illness?

Epidemic of course being 'caught' from others but a word mis-used often in the media.

Hmm - tough one!  I have a disease (psoriatic arthritis) but it doesn't make me ill!  I cold makes me ill, but I wouldn't call it a disease.  But then, measles makes people ill and I WOULD call it a disease!  Confused now - is this one of those conversations you should have a 2am after a few sherberts!!

We were taught at college that an illness is a vague condition that causes discomfort or pain and. A disease refers to a condition that has established reasons behind it and can be chronic or acute

Got this from my notes.

Obviously the NHS has rules where only a 'disease' is covered - and an 'illness' isn't. Legal semantics. 'Disease' sounds far more ominous doesn't it?

This is one definition

"An illness is a vague condition that causes discomfort or pain. A disease refers to a condition that has established reasons behind it.
2. An illness is mostly curable. There are some diseases that cannot be cured, only managed."
