Hi I'm new to this forum and never posted in a forum before....
I'm 38 and had recurrent ovarian cysts on my right side for last two years ...I'm due to have surgery in three weeks to remove my ovaries as been in so much pain from cysts...and now getting cysts on my left ovary...my surgery is complex as I have extensive bowel adhesions and need joint procedure with bowel and gynae surgeons and I'm worried to death that something will go wrong this time as now my fifth op in two years...
Anyway I just wanted some advice on hrt and advice as once my ovaries are gone I'll go through menopause...any advice welcome xxx

Well done for searching for info. prior to surgery.  Did your surgeons not give advice or recommend a Menopause Specialist?!?

At least you know about adhesions prior to your op. When I went in to get my ovaries removed, I had been in a lot of pain also. Mine was done by keyhole surgery, but they found a lot of adhesions. Surgery therefore took much longer than planned. Very nearly needed full surgery to remove them. Lady who was operated on after me said I was away a very long time. However, I have been fine since.

I was already on HRT by that time after hysterectomy.

You've had a tough time - you poor thing.  Major surgery is no joke and I can understand your concerns.  We are here to support you, so do share your experiences.  Hopefully your doctors will prescribe a good HRT for you post op, as at your age you need HRt to protect your heart and bones for the long term and also prevent urogenital atrophy. 
Read up all the info on this site to get clued up.  Print off the different HRTs under TREATMENTS above so you can discuss your options with the doctors.  It can be good to start with a sequential HRt and put up with a monthly bleed - this allows you to assess whether the progesterone in a particular HRT type suits you or not.  It can be good to start with Femoston. They might offer you a Mirena which can be a good option as you simply add oestrogen as a patch or gel alongside.
Going into surgical menopause can be tough at first but if you are prepared and given HRT straight off, this can prevent the meno symptoms emerging too strongly.

 :)thank you for welcoming me 😘 I've had keyhole but last op was open surgery which I think will be this time...consultant hasn't mentioned anything about hrt and no doubt I won't see her til day of op now...lots of fors and againsts all very confusing 🤔
Been in so much pain not working at mo and been really down cos basically been in pain seems like forever! My open surgery was April everything fine then August found out got another 7cm cyst just like that I was gutted...just want op over and done with now so I can get back to my life 😄

There are many women on here that will be able to give you good advice.
Your post could have been written by me - over 10 ops both keyhole & cut for cysts left & right.  Ovaries were taken out on separate ops.  Last op I had horrendous adhesions. 
I feel for you,  but talk to your consultant & get what you need.

So sorry to hear about your health issues. You absolutely must have HRT following surgery - your body will go into hormonal shock immediately and you are very very young to be deficient. I can't think why this has not already been suggested! You may also need testosterone at some point since this is also produced by the ovaries.

Although (I presume) you are keeping your uterus, do read the section on menopause and HRT after hysterectomy here - although with your uterus you will need progesterone (scroll down to "If ovaries are removed"). http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/aftermeno.php , as well as looking at the different types of HRT as Dancinggirl suggests.

Hi all..just a quick update...o had my surgery on Friday removed both my ovaries left uterus ended up with a stent in my ureter...been in absolute agony and very tearful 😢
Just seen my consultant and hopefully home tomorrow going to start me on combined HRT tomorrow ...not had any symptoms yet but suppose I've been occupied with pain x

Flower1 am so sorry to hear what you've been going through

I hope you have someone to care for you while you recover, and that this last op will be the one to solve your problems. To have so much pain for so long must have really affected you emotionally...

Hi Flower1 - thanks for letting us know how it went and I do hope you will be home soon and in less pain. The symptoms from removal of ovaries (from what I have read) may not become apparent straight away although sometimes they do, but important to take HRT as soon as you possibly can.

Just a point about the combined HRT - hopefully all will be fine as it is with many women - but if not there are lots of different types you can try. It is often the progestogen which can cause side effects in some susceptible women - fingers crossed it will all work out for you. Have you thought about which type you would like to try or has the consultant discussed with you? The post-menopausal ( no-bleed ) types are  all listed here:
