Hi
Im new to this and very unsure where to start! Im 46 and in peri for about a year or so (I think!)....My periods have become lighter and I have not had anything for the last 3 months. My biggest symptom is anxiety and I have been prescribed Fluroxitine by my GP ...I have been taking it for almost 2 weeks
but no sign of any improvement. I also take omeprazole for acid reflux and wondered if this could be hindering the effectiveness of the AD.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm new today too, can't offer any advice on what you're asking but just wanted to say hello :-) I joined to speak about a herbal supplement that I have started taking, have a read if you're interested.

I take a beta-blocka for anxiety and an AD for depression though I have found that adding 5mg of AD has helped the anxiety a lot.  I also have an emergency pill if anxiety overwhelms me.

You may find that your periods have gone or you will get various bleeds/symptoms for a while yet.  Some GPs don't believe that ladies are in menopause unless they suffer hot sweats but that isn't true.  Jot down your symptoms?  If anything bothers you, see your Practice Nurse or GP.

Hi
Thanks for the replies....I just really want some reassurance that the AD will kick in and start working some day soon!

Sparkle... Its strange but I feel I know you already...I read alot of your posts about acid reflux when I was suffering from a constant sore throat and worrying myself stupid! Your posts and experience really calmed me down!

HI Anne 68 I feel exactly like you. I have gone through hell of week in regards to anxiety. I am taking AD pristiq but does not seem to help at all. I take maxalon to help with nausea. I have irregular period at the moment. We have to just toughen it out. Can any one help out by telling if these symptoms settle after perimenopause or not.

If the AD doesn't appear to be easing symptoms: and it can take 3-4 months B4 a patient is aware of benefits: then ask your GP for something else?

Hi anne68

 :welcomemm: from me too.

Anxiety is such a common symptom of peri-menopause and is often caused by the fluctuations in hormone levels and long term by low oestrogen.

Unfortunately your doctor is now completely out of date in prescribing Anti-depressants such as Fluoxetine for anxiety brought on by menopause. Here is the relevant section:

Psychological symptoms

1.4.5 Consider HRT to alleviate low mood that arises as a result of the menopause.

1.4.6 Consider CBT to alleviate low mood or anxiety that arise as a result of the menopause.

1.4.7 Ensure that menopausal women and healthcare professionals involved in their care understand that there is no clear evidence for SSRIs or SNRIs to ease low mood in menopausal women who have not been diagnosed with depression (see the NICE guideline on depression in adults).

https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng23/chapter/Recommendations#managing-short-term-menopausal-symptoms

So - just because you may not yet be experiencing flushes and sweats does not mean the doctor cannot prescribe HRT - especially if you have no history of depression. Also from what I understand that is a difficult one to come off so perhaps better to see if you can stop these rather than wait 3 months - before you become acclimatised to them long term!

You have been given the wrong treatment and especially as you are only 46 -  even though you are not at menopause yet, if you have not had a period for 3 months your oestrogen levels will have started to fall on average, and it is important to keep oestrogen levels up at least until the natural average age of menopause of 51/52.

I would strongly suggest you consider HRT and go back to your doc - in the meantime there are other self-help techniques and strategies which others have mentioned on other threads, that you can use to help with your anxiety if it is not debilitating and preventing you from leaving the house or doing normal activities?

Do read up about it as much as you can and let us know if we can help further :)

Make sense what you have said Hurdity but specialist also want us to suffer more and start with AD first. I want to check with specialist and insist on hormone solution
