Gynaecologist appointment
« on: November 15, 2016, 05:57:43 PM »

Good evening all
Had my gynaecologist appointment today what a waste of time.
The very young doctor said why have you been referred and I said to discuss getting HRT and she said we don't really do HRT here you need to be referred to a meno specialist!!!
I thought that's what my GP had done!! alas not.
I would like to know of anyone's experience of Professor John Studd as I am going to call tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment.
Failing that Dr Nick Panay any of your experiences would be most welcome.
Just want my quality of life back.

Autumn16, sorry to hear about your abortive trip to the gynaecologist, what a waste of your valuable time.

I am a patient of Professor Studd and would have no hesitation in recommending him.  His preferred regime of Oestrogel, testosterone and Utrogestan changed my life and in my opinion, the key to the success of his regime is the overall flexibility of the products used and in particular, his low dose prescription of the Utrogestan (progesterone) part of HRT which is where most women experience problems.  You may be a more straightforward case than me and of course he may prescribe a different regime for you.  The good thing is, you know that you are going to an expert who gets it and knows everything there is to know about the menopause and HRT.

If you can arrange to have some blood tests on the NHS prior to your appointment, it will save you a lot of money.  You will need all the usual stuff along with a full set of thyroid tests, B12 and of course all the hormones tests including testosterone - also try to get DHEA tests if you can.

He will be more than happy to write to your GP with his recommended prescription and this should mean that you can have your regime via the NHS which will also save money.

I hope it goes well for you and please let us know how you get on.

I have seen Dr Tina Peers and can highly recommend her, she referred to Nick Panay as her colleague.

Notwithstanding your wish to go to a private gynae Autumn16 - if your GP practice has referred you to the wrong gynae then ideally you should return to the practice and ask for a proper referral. I thought the issue was your concern about HRT due to your allergic reaction - and surely there must be someone that can address this? If you are prepared to try it then your own GP Practice should offer you HRT if you are not medically contra-indicated and to save yourself a lot of money why not try again - at least even if you've made a private appointment which might be some weeks away, you can still try to pursue the NHS route. We need to do our bit to help educate doctors as well and stand up for our rights ( she says with militant hat on!)!!

Good luck anyway!

Hello Hurdity and all

I managed to get an appointment with my GP this evening and am going to do exactly as you suggest. I am appalled that so many women are lleft to try and sort out this significant transition in our lives on our own.
Without this forum and informed people like yourself , I don't know what I would have done.
It's all well and good telling me to avoid oestrogen but I or they don't know that oestrogen would be problematic in my case without trying.
I am at the point where I will try anything to get my quality of life back.
Thank you for your advice and support 😀

Well I had my appointment at the GP.
He said I should contact PALS and clarify why I was sent to gynaecologist and not menopause clinic,!!
He said he wouldn't consider giving me HRT as 1. He said it wasn't his field.
2. He would end up in court if I swelled up after using hrt.
I managed to get him to agree to hormone blood tests.
I asked for a bone scan but he declined stating radiation can cause cancer. I said I have been on vit d twice daily since 2008 prescribed by endocrinologist and I have never had bone scan but as I am going through menopause I am more concerned he said don't worry!!!

Well done for trying! Sounds like hard work. So he did refer you to a meno clinic initially? Well I guess you wouldn't want to have unnecessary X-rays - can't remember if you fit the category for them? They are covered here:

http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/DEXA-scan/Pages/Introduction.aspx

I can see the point re the swelling - you need to find out what caused this and perhaps they could give you a small trial - and you would need a specialist gynae also who is specialist in allergic reactions I expect? I can't remember how serious the reaction you had was?

At least you are doing something! Did you decide also about having a private appointment in reserve?

Hi Hurdity
Yes I emailed Prof John Studd today.
In the past I have had urticaria with angioeadema with anaphylaxis.
