Left sided breast soreness
« on: November 28, 2016, 07:58:48 AM »

I am 55 and am postmenopausal.  I have been on estrogel with a Mirena coil since Feb 2014 after a year or so messing about with patches that would not stick.  I had really severe and frequent hot flushes in the beginning, but think I have got over that stage and have hardly used any of the estrogel for well over a year now and am making an appointment to have the Mirena removed.

When I was first on the gel and Mirena, I experienced breast pain and swelling in both breasts and my consultant advised GLA, which I duly took at the advised dosage.

About a month ago I notice soreness at the armpit side of my left breast.  Neither of my breasts are swollen and at first I put this down a an underwired bra.  However, the pain has not gone away and last night was really intense.  I would describe the pain as extreme soreness, rather than an aching pain.  Of course, I have done a thorough breast self-exam and made an appointment with my GP.  I just wondered if anyone else on this forum at my stage of postmenopause has experienced similar?

I have been referred by my GP to the hospital breast clinic for further investigation on 8 December.  I will keep you all posted of my outcome.

Progestogen on its own causes breast swelling in my experience.  In fact when I went onto the progestogen only pill from the combined pill (which contains way more progestogen with synthetic oestrogen) my breasts went from an elegant decline to footballs (and just as hard) in days - it could be the effect of the mirena without the oestrogel?

Also, as breast tissue declines, the ducts shorten and widen, and dead cells from the lining do not clear well and accumulate, so you can get inflamed areas. This is called mammary duct ecstasia, but it is a bit of a woolly definition, with not a lot of information around.  I have had sore patches where breasts did not clear properly which came up on my mammogram and were investigated - all well.

Best to get it looked at though.

Wow that's really interesting dahliagirl, and would explain what I get when using prog. Badga, I had similar pains and odd feeling lumps earlier this year. Went for screening and it was benign fluid filled cysts which were prob due to hrt use. They (specialists) weren't concerned and the lumps subsided. I only ever feel breast issues when using prog so it may well be as dahliagirl describes re lower E levels? Good luck with check up, I'm sure you'll find it's related to changing levels in relation to each other.
