Author Topic: Lowered EVOREL patches 75mcgs to 50 mcgs and hot flushes have reduced?? Why?  (Read 7661 times)

I seem to have been developing breast tenderness around the sides but was still suffering from a lot of hot flushes. Just a constantly hot back.
Because of the breast tenderness I've lowered my Evorel patch down to 50mcgs from 75mcgs and feel much cooler, less hungry with fewer hot flushes!  I am more tired ( that could be thyroid) but I feel more comfy. I'm puzzled.
How can that be??
If a patch is too strong can it give you hot flushes?
I'm 52 with no ovaries.

Hi Joesmum, a few weeks ago I increased my hrt patch from 50mg to 75mg but had to reduce it back down because I started to experience hot flushes and my face was as red as  a lobster!

Yes, I think it was Dancinggirl who said she too had found the same with a higher dose.
I'm also baffled as to why it happens but I'm off to see my gynae on Tuesday to discuss my hrt dose so I will ask the question..... If I remember ( note to self, write all questions down beforehand) 😁

Too much estrogen can be as bad as too little. This is why you need to stay on a dose for at least a month or two to make sure how it's working.

A while ago I went through a spate of poor sleep and experimented with going from a 50 patch to 75, and it made everything worse. I went back to the 50 and everything settled and has been fine ever since.

The poor sleep was obviously being caused by something else, and sorted itself out.

Hi Joesmum - this is interesting as I e been told to increase to 4 pumps oestrogel but started flushing again! I'm not sure oestrogel suits me either - what were your problems with it?

If you are peri-menopausal it is difficult to attribute a specific effect to a specific cause.

I think if you increase oestrogen too quickly and by too big a dose it can have the reverse effect on some women - not sure why. Also beware tachyphyllaxis but this only occurs at extremely high doses. For example I am post-menopause and increased my patch by 12.5 mcg from 50 mcg to 62.5 mcg with no adverse effects (reason being due to also taking testosterone so worried about androgenic effects). Maybe an increase of 1 pump of oestrogel and 25 mcg patch increases oestrogen too fast and try to add only a little more at a time for a couple of weeks or so - maybe longer?

That's very interesting, Joesmum! And I'm glad you're feeling better. :)

Yes, a lot of ladies over at Hystersisters have been overdosed with Estrogen as their consultants 'assumed' they needed more as they had no ovaries. Just goes to show!

Also, it's interesting that I remember donnacrichton had a hideous time with a burning back when she was overdosed on Estrogel. Damn, I now HATE that stuff with a passion! I've had a hideous couple of days with severe panic attacks as the dose enters my system - it really slams in for me. I'm much worse now than I was even when I was just taking a tiny 0.3mg dose of Premarin! My GP has had to once again prescribe Diazepam, which I hate taking. If you're taking benzo's to deal with your HRT, something is seriously, seriously wrong!

It's a good thing that I'm seeing my Consultant tomorrow - what with the rash I developed on it too, it's a almost been enough to send me to the psychiatric hospital.  :'(

Thank you Joesmum - do you think the patches are similar to pellets in the way they deliver.  I think I have a rush of oestrogel and then it wears off really quickly. I've been prescribed both estradot and oestrogel and think I'll change back to a low patch and work up.

I hope your new dose keeps working for you.

Dawncam, YES!!! if I may jump in (sorry ladies) this is my EXACT experience of the gel - a great huge ramp up, and then the dose drops. It's horrible! I'm guessing that patches are similar to implants - a trickle dose!

Hi Joesmum and Tempest - I've been on gel for over a year now so I'd hope there was some sort of reservoir! Apparently not! I moved to patches but got very high symptoms even when I lowered the dose so thought gel would be easier to tweak. I can actually feel the highs and lows on a daily basis with gel.im really tired of this now - quite literally, not least because I've spent a lot of money on a well known wimpole street specialist. I'm going to start on low dose patch and work up. I'm keeping a very detailed diary as I know I'm not ready to stop hrt but wish to god I could get the right dose.
