Testosterone Helps VA
« on: June 16, 2017, 11:51:24 AM »

So in my ever continuing research (ahem), I have been looking into whether:

A) Testosterone treatment locally can help women who are contraindicated for ERT (tricky, as I'm not sure how this can be achieved without very specialist guidance and its probably not an NHS recognised treatment).

and

B) Whether adding systemic Testosterone to existing HRT produces superior improvement for VA symptoms.

The answer seems to be YES!

This article discusses in part the role of Testosterone in urogenital and genital health:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/sm2.17/full

There are other sources you can research yourselves if you're interested, but I don't want to bombard you with links!  ;)

So - in conclusion I think it is WELL worth adding Testostrone to your regime if you are having problems treating VA sufficiently with local and systemic HRT (Maryjane, I'm thinking specifically of you - and Dancinggirl historically when you were using both systemic and local HRT)! It cant harm, and you''ll know after a fair trial if it has any noticeable benefits for you.

Hope this gives ladies who are struggling another option to think about!

Love,

Tempest xxxxx

Hi , YES absolutely itnos known to be part of the VA puzzle I haven't read the article but if I remember we have androgen receptors in the vulva , and T is required almost equally to O.

I am at my gynae next week and I will discuss , will read article later .

Thanks a lot . X

Hello Tempest.

Many thanks for an interesting post.

I'm intrigued by Maryjane's comment about T receptors in the vulva. Could women who produce more  T than average  escape with milder VA symptoms? In other words the receptors are still getting a reasonable supply and this compensates for the decline in O? Plus I wonder if some women have more oestrogen receptors as a result of  naturally producing more in the first place, larger or more active ovaries perhaps?

Sorry if this all sounds silly but I'd love to understand why some women suffer so many symptoms and others so few. There must be reason don't you think.

Take care ladies.

Thanks for this Tempest and must remember to read when I have some time to focus! And do bombard away - links to research studies are interesting to many of us - especially if you've done the searching and found them for us - I do more of that sort of thing in winter, when the garden is dead and we tend to stay put ( ie don;t go away)  ::)!

There are more AR (androgen receptors) in the vulva region than estrogen receptors.

The above has come from a top women's health physio , who's expertise is hormones / menopause.
