re. digital medical thermometers
« on: September 27, 2016, 06:33:34 PM »

I recently decided that I'd like to get one of these. My local Boots had none so I ordered one from Amazon. It arrived earlier this week but I had to return it. Firstly the battery was virtually flat when it arrived. i thought of just replacing the battery but found that I would have to buy a specialist absolutely  minute screwdriver to open it up. It seemed very fiddly. I have since looked at 1 or 2 in shops and they were just the same re. replacing the battery.
Has anyone found a thermometer which would be a bit more practical? I'd be happy with non digital but haven't seen any.

I  am awaiting my refund from Amazon.

Hi Katejo - my digital one is by A&D which may be the one you have?  I bought it in Sainsburys and it wasn't very expensive. You can use it orally, rectally or under the arm and gives a sixty second read out. I've had it four years and the battery is still fine - it has a life of 200 hours apparently. I hadn't even thought about replacing the battery as I think the battery would cost more than the product.

I don't think that you will find a non-digital thermometer nowadays due to the safety aspect.

Thanks Taz. I don't remember who made the 1 bought from Amazon. Perhaps it is worth it if the battery can last 4 years. I assumed that it ran down quickly because of the way that the one in my Amazon purchase was definitely already flat. It gave me a warning as soon as I switched it on.

Kate,
Did you buy it direct from Amazon or did you use a Third Party Seller? A lot of Third Party Sellers state the item is new when in fact it is used so that may be why there was a problem with the battery. Have a look and see if Amazon sell it themselves.

Yes it was a  3rd party seller. I know that because they have since emailed to ask for feedback which I gave them. Didn't notice when ordering or I would have avoided them. Product had good reviews. I must remember to add a bad review.

That's a shame you already gave them positive feedback but you can still delete it.  You won't be able to comment on the Seller on your review as Amazon won't publish it. That's their new rules!

You have to be careful with the third party sellers. If they delay giving you your money back, raise an A-Z Guarantee Claim through Amazon and you will definitely get your money back.

No I haven't put a positive review on Amazon. I just replied to an email from the supplier who wanted to know why I was returning the product.

I have young kids, so this issue recently came about for me too. I have been using simple digital thermometers from the pharmacy, but question their accuracy and find the battery life is poor. It seems shortly after replacing the battery, they begin to malfunction. I searched for a quality thermometer, but the ones like the doctor's offices have are very expensive, and I notice the nurses often fiddling with them and having to exchange for another when they aren't functioning. I don't know about the UK, but I don't think you can buy mercury thermometers anymore. I wish I could, as I'm sure my mother still uses the same one from my childhood. I have settled with buying Vicks brand (like the vapor rub) digital thermometers, keeping a couple on hand in case one quits, and treating them as semi-disposible. They aren't very expensive here, and those are the ones we've had the best luck with.

Isn't there a strip to put across the forehead to judge temperature?

We have a digital one from Boots bought years++ ago, however, without the now lost instructions ………  ::)

Go to Lloyds Chemists, many Surgeries are linked in with them and they should be able to advise you.  To be honest, we don't use ours ………

Today i heard back from the supplier (following my public complaint on Amazon). They are sending me a replacement free of charge. Yes i have seen strips before but don't know how they work. Wanted to buy one because I have had a couple of occasions when i thought i did have a temperature but the nurse taking the reading said not.

So believe the Nurse and save your money?

I can count on one hand how many times in 41 years that we have considered that we required use of a thermometer - twice  ::).  When I did have a temp. Himself knew as the cold wet flannel placed on my forehead came off steaming - apparently: I was too gone to know much.
