Feeling completely awful
« on: September 13, 2016, 05:32:44 PM »

Hi ladies,

I appear to be going down hill rapidly again. I called the meno nurse who was useless over the phone, she had no idea about doses of Femosten 1/10 verses 2/10. what the ratio was, and that it is the same amount of progesterone. Or about any side effects.
Anyway , after doing what she suggested an upping the dose by half a tablet every other day , I am now experiencing bad periods  - stomach cramps and spotting. I look like a zombie again, I am emotional and have very dark circles. I cannot find words, have no energy and ache all over.

I found this describing the symptoms of too much oestrogen
•bloating
•swelling and tenderness in the breasts
•decreased sex drive
•irregular menstrual periods
•headaches
•mood swings
•fibrocystic developments in the breast
•weight gain
•hair loss
•cold hands or feet
•feeling tired or lacking energy
•difficulty with memory
•trouble sleeping
•increased symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or PMS

all of which I have .
Oh dear I could cry , but I am too tired.
Looks like oestrogen does build up in the system over time.

The trouble is when I am in this state I can't even decide what to have for dinner , let alone think rationally.

Any support, thoughts or advice would be much appreciated

Hello pepperminty.

I am so sorry that you are suffering. Unfortunately I am not one of the expert ladies but I did want to send hugs and sympathy (co- incidentally I've been wondering if my current difficulties are due to too much oestrogen so your post is most timely!).

I'm sure someone will be along soon to advise you but in the meantime I hope you feel better soon.

Take care.

Hi peppermint

So sorry to hear you are suffering unfortunately I don't know enough about hormones/hrt to give you any useful advice however under the treatment options on this site it does show that Femoston 2/10
contains double the estradiol of 1/10 and I'm not too sure you should be cutting tablets in half, but I am sure someone more knowledgeable than me will along with some good advice.

Hope you'll soon be feeling better

Wee soul, Pepperminty! I'm sending you a

Even with no ovaries, I can tell you that I get build up very quickly. Ive now identified that this is what happened to me on Estrogel, even though my level was only around 200. I felt AWFUL. I've only just identified this after chatting to a very knowledgeable lady at our Reproductive Health Clinic (also Menopause Clinic) the other day.

This is why I say that comparing 'levels' is pretty dangerous. Who knows what levels we had during our reproductive years, or what they were when we felt our best? Yes, I believe this is why Specialists are correct to go by symptoms alone!

What's even weirder is that some symptoms of too little are actually the same as too much. Crazy for us to figure out!

I now take my cue from the mantra on the Surgical Menopause Support blog and Google support group - 'go low and go slow'. Also, they wisely say that if you feel horrible and feel as if you must do something, ANYTHING then your best bet is to reduce your dosage rather than increase as it takes longer to clear an excess than increase a deficit.

I've just had to go back down to the teeny, tiny dose of 0.3mg Premarin after I got monster vertigo on the 'standard' 0.625mg dose. I was also starting to bloat madly too! Just goes to show that we are all very different and so are our hormonal needs.

Are you now cutting your dose down?

You seem to have followed that familiar route where you first feel good with the oestrogen but then things regress and you add more and feel even worse. It could be that the exogenous oestrogen has lowered your own oestrogen too much (negative feedback) or that you didn't need a lot of oestrogen to start with.

Perhaps you could stop the Femoston to let everything revert back to 100% of your natural hormones and then try half of a Femoston 1/10 (if they said you can cut them) to see if a small amount is all you need.

If not you may need more progesterone at this point (if peri). It's all trial and error but the adding more and more never seems to work for those that try it here. My friend did this with Oestrogel and felt worse and worse, after initially feeling great. We think its because it shut down her own oestrogen production too much. She feels a lot better off of it (she was taking for bad PMT prescribed by Studd).

Hi Ladies,

thank you all.

I was feeling very low yesterday and I am not that great this morning. I think that I may need to cut the half tablet of oestrogen every other day out and see how I feel. I think that it just doesn't agree with me. I will have to hope that has an effect.

If I stop the HRT and I am worse and have to go back on it again , I dread the first few months as I got terrible PMT and couldn't leave the house . Felt like I was dying.

Yes I think it is right that oestrogen is not always our friend.

I will try and have a logical think.

Hi Pepperminty,
I'm feeling exactly the same as you except my breasts are almost numb, no feelings whatsoever, I do have crippling anxiety though.
I've been like this for around 3 months now and although I know it's hormonal I'm reluctant to do anything about it invade it has a detrimental effect, especially mentally.
I've never thought about if it could be down to too much oestrogen but it certainly makes sense if our own hormones are kicking in but how do we know, especially when using HRT.
I'm sorry I can't answer your questions but I just want to let you know you are not alone. I also feel just like you right now.

Hi Pepperminty

I'm on my 4th month of Femoston 1/10 and am not doing so well on the 'oestrogen only' weeks and my periods are heavy and painful too. Once I get onto the grey combined tablets, I feel fine again.  I am considering stopping and trying the Mirena coil and oestrogen patches.  It's a shame because I loved Femoston at first and it was great for aches and pains and hot flushes, but I can't be doing with feeling awful for 2 weeks every month.  Hope you find a solution.

Hi ladies,

thank you so much for your kind words and replies. I am a little better this morning, still feel exhausted and achy. I need to try and have a think about what I need to do.
I feel rather confused as to the best course of action. I have made a GP appointment next week to discuss how I am feeling.
