Three Cerazette Mini Pills as Progesterone part of HRT
« on: August 19, 2016, 12:34:12 PM »

Hi

Just wondered if anyone has heard of or used this as progesterone part of hrt and how it worked out?  Apparently a poster in another forum mentioned that 3 x Cerazette is equivalent of 1mg progesterone.  Not sure if that is correct and they were prescribed this by a specialist to use with Oestrogen only patch or gel.

Would be interested to hear what others think of this.

Many Thanks

Hi Angel66

I am not familiar with Cerazette but looking it up I see it consists of 75 mcg desogestrel which is not used as part of HRT.

The poster is wrong re progesterone if she is talking about actual progesterone. Not sure what she means though? Different progestogens have different effects on the endometrium and it can be difficult to compare. Certainly progesterone as in progesterone - is used in quantities between 100 mg and 200 mg as part of HRT - not 1 mg!!!!

Desogestrel is used in some combined contraceptive pills eg Marvelon where the dose is 150 mcg which is equivalent to two Cerazette pills.

If you are thinking of this then you would need to talk to a specialist!

Hi Hurdity

This confused me a little as well.  Was just surfing around for some information and came across these links:-

http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php't=83945

http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/menopause/2258311-Withdrawal-bleed-after-coming-off-Noriday-age-55

As I'm only on the starting ladder of HRT, I'm not clear on some of the mgs but I did think that sounded very low!

I've also been looking on here tonight at Oestrogel and Provera option.  Maybe that's something else to consider but again not sure where contraception would fit in with that as definitely don't want Mirena and had pills for so long not sure how gel would fit in with my lifestyle and also heard not everyone absorbs it well.  So much to think about.  I'm definitely going to come back as a man in my next life!  Make things a lot easier!   :) ;D

Thanks for the info Hurdity x

Hi again Angel66

The mumsnet poster - second link - was talking about Noriday, a different POP containing norethisterone - which is used as part of HRT. In this case one pill contains 0.35 mg norethisterone - so 3 of these would equal 1 mg of that particular progestogen - which is the daily progestogen dose for higher dose continuous combined HRT types. As desogestrel is not used as part of HRT - then it would difficult to work out an off license dose for Cerazette to use for HRT. However a specialist may well be able to prescribe this?

Hi Again Hurdity

Didn't realize Noriday was a different pill.  Thought maybe it was a different name for Cerazette.

Thanks for the help and advice. I think this is definitely only something a specialist would prescribe as part of hrt x
