Can't stay awake!
« on: July 31, 2016, 04:30:10 PM »

Hello everyone,

I'm just wondering if anyone else suffers or previously suffered from the following symptom when they have their period. From day one of my period through to day 6 or more, I suffer from debilitating fatigue. For example, today is day 4 of my cycle, I went to bed at 7pm last night (would have gone sooner if I was able), got up around 7:30am, had breakfast, had to go back to bed to sleep, got up, had lunch, had to go back to bed etc, etc.

I absolutely HAVE to sleep is the only way I can describe the tiredness, it's totally overwhelming. There's no way I could drive a car feeling like this for example.

Does or has anyone else suffered from this? It can be quite scary & it would be reassuring if I wasn't the only one out there who has this every month. I'm seeing a specialist next month at the Professor Studd clinic but I notice in the pre-medical questionnaire that it doesn't list "Fatigue" as a symptom. It's one of my main symptoms! I also have an under active thyroid gland (Hashimoto's) so perhaps that' throws things out when my period starts too.

Any comments welcome, thank you xxx

Hello Blue Kingfisher.

I am post meno now and  struggling with a different range of symptoms but your post did remind me that when I was peri meno I absolutely needed to go to bed after lunch. I would change my clothes and get into bed and fall into a deep sleep, I would dream as well. I know this isn't quite what you are experiencing but I do recall that I couldn't function in the evening without my daytime sleep.

It may also be worth reviewing your thyroid meds, perhaps have your bloods taken when you feel your worst to see what your reading is.

Sorry I can't be more helpful but many ladies have posted about crashing fatigue so I'm sure they'll be along shortly with some good advice.

Take care.

K.

Crashing fatigue.  I had this occasionally, when my brain shuts off I could sleep on a linen line!

I would get your thyroid checked again -  i think the menopause can have an effect on the thyroid function so I would hotfoot back to the GP to get blood tests.  DG x

"Crashing fatigue" is a very good description CLKD as this is exactly what happens, I totally crash!

CLKD - have you managed to find any relief from this? Mine happens when I'm on my period.

Dancing Girl - yes, good point about the thyroid & will get it checked. As this problem is cyclical, I'm kind of hoping that when I'm on the right HRT my thyroid will be better off too. I suspect my thyroid levels will be "normal" like they always are  :o

I'm going to have to stay awake today as its not the weekend (husband at work) & it's the school summer holidays (I have a six year old daughter) so it's going to be a long day. I will probably be in bed the second he finishes work & asleep pretty quickly! Today is going to be really tough!  :(

Hi Blue Kingfisher - have you had all of the blood tests to check why you are quite so fatigued. It doesn't sound quite "normal" (whatever that is) to me to be so tired that you have to go to bed? Does your GP know that you really can't function? I'm not sure if you are in work because, if so, do you have to take days off every month? It must be so disruptive to your life.

It was probably hormone related.  I remember my Mum would sit down and drop off to sleep, 'just like that'  :o
