Hi
This is something I have a problem with. It is related to hay fever, Silver Birch pollen in particular.
Basically, the same protein that appears on the silver birch pollen also appears on some other things like fruits, which are related to the silver birch. It can give you similar effects to hayfever - sneezing, sinus problems, itchy mouth, sore throat. Some people find their mouth and lips swell.
More info is found here:
https://www.allergyuk.org/oral-allergy-syndrome/oral-allergy-syndromeI think I have always had a problem as peanuts used to give me tonsillitis when I was young. However, it has been worse in the last few years. I have had sore throats for years. A couple of years ago I ate a nectarine of a variety that I had not had before and my lips swelled and I got a 'trout pout'
Foods that cause me problems are: (wait for it
)
Apples, pears, Peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, hazelnuts, almonds. Also other nuts, and peanuts are iffy.
Unexpectedly, carrots and potato peel (do not rub eyes after peeling potatoes)
Most of these are ok if cooked and the protein denatured. They do need to be cooked properly and not 'al dente' but the nuts seem to be impervious to this.
To complicate matters, some varieties are worse than others, so for eg Bramley apples are usually ok but cox's make me sneeze if just I handle them.
