At My Wits End
« on: July 15, 2016, 03:11:51 PM »

After yet another week of hot flushes, sleepless nights, and sore boobs I went back to the Drs this afternoon to see if he could offer me any other advice. Once again I got fobbed off saying I had only had these symptoms since January, it is likely I am going through an early menopause but leave it a bit longer before doing anything about it, although he offered me anti depressants, which I declined.
I was seriously annoyed, upset, and frustrated by the time I got home and almost a knee jerk reaction and booked a personal health assessment through a private medical company, I hope this might finally confirm what my GP has said. Because I will have a smear test as part of my health assessment I have to wait until a week on Monday which is going to seem a long time but finally there might be some light at the end of the tunnell

Change your GP. He/she is talking rubbish.   :kick:

If you have an 'early' menopause you need HRT to protect bones and heart.  Have a look-see at the Daisy web-site, I think there are links at the top of the page.  You need a sympathetic ear and support

Browse round!  Make notes. Nothing is 'only' or 'just'.  Your GP should be offering various tests i.e. thyroid function, the appropriate hormone guide-line tests and giving advice.

CLKD is correct, you shouldn't have to be paying to get what you are entitled to.

Sorry to hear that you are not getting anywhere with your GP, we were having a similar conversation about this on another thread so it would appear that it's still happening despite the new NICE guidelines.

I know you should not have to pay for medical advice but have you considered consulting Professor John Studd?  He specialises in all things hormonal/menopause related and I am sure he would be able to help you.  You could have your blood tests with the NHS and then take them along to your appointment to save money.  Why not ring his office and ask for a telephone consultation if that would help?

It's your life that is being affected and your time and there is no point in flogging a dead horse if this doctor is unwilling to help you.  He should not be fobbing you off with ADs (which is completely the wrong line of treatment) and he should know that you need to start HRT as soon as your oestrogen levels drop.

I was having problems finding the right HRT regime and it was only after my consultation with Professor Studd that I finally reached breakthrough felt completely normal again.

Again we need to report these GPs - maybe Dr Currie should make a list of those not assisting women  ???

Have you got a different GP at your surgery that you could go and see? You really shouldn't have to pay for this very basic care - it's your entitlement in order to protect your future health. You could also print off the information from this site under the early menopause section which will back up your case and give you more "clout" to get HRT prescribed. This is the info from the menu at the top of the page http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/pm-management.php

Thanks for your support everyone. I have paid the deposit now for my health assessment so I might as well go along, I just want to get this over with now.

Hi Jessicaponies, keep us posted as to how you get on. I've often thought of booking one so would be interested to know. Welcome to the forum by the way.... :)

I had meno symptoms when I was in my late 30's and had hormone blood tests done and they said that i was almost post menopausal :o although i was still having periods.

They were wrong as all settled down within 6 months and I was 45 when i started peri meno with all that entails and 50 when I became post meno.

It taught me that hormone bloods tests are accurate purely at the time they are taken but not necessarily accurate a few hours later as hormones change dramatically.

I hope that you are experiencing what I did  that was a little blip many years before true peri meno hit rather than genuine early meno. HOpefully not too much emphasis will be put on any hormone blood test results.
