Am I or aren't I ?
« on: June 21, 2016, 08:13:02 PM »

Hello to all , I am so pleased that I have found this forum as i feel like I'm going a bit crazy .

Sit tight here's my story .

I'm 42 , I have been getting weird things happening to me since about August 2015 just after I recovered from a bad cold .

I noticed that my saliva was foamy and I was aware of it in the back of my throat , it felt like post nasal drip. Some mornings I have to spend ages clearing my throat . My throat mucus seems really thick , stringy and glue like. I'd put this down to a virus or allergy . Pollen and dust does seem to make it worse I've never had any allergy problems before .

My sinuses seem to be constantly pressured and feel inflamed but not blocked. Air conditioning really bothers my sinuses where it never bothered me before .

My eyes seem so dry and sore. I can't see my screen properly at work ( been to opticians ands wear reading glasses ) I take eye drops but it hardly makes a difference

My mind seems fuzzy all the time and I find it difficult to concentrate at work . My memory is appalling whereas before I'd consider it good , I actually have to rely on my husband to remember things so things must be bad .

My body feels like it's shaking inside not externally or visible it's really wierd . It's like I'm  vibrating ! I thought it might be anxiety but it seems different although I do worry about things a lot more

Night sweats come quite often but not really bad thankfully

My periods are still regular but are shorter and a bit lighter , they last about 4 days

I sometimes feel sick and nauseous

So far I've been to the doctors it seems like they haven't a clue. Blimey surely I can't be the only woman to have these symptoms in their practice ! I've had my sinuses checked with a ct scan with no problems found , I've had standard run of the mill blood test done which found I was low on vit d , so I supplement this .

I thought most of my problems were to do with allergies so I took antihistamines but my eyes dried up so much it became unbearable . I stopped and they have gotten a bit better .

It wasn't until I went to an allergy clinic and the consultant just mentioned in passing that my hormones could be responsible for my thick mucus.

I am at my wits end , it seems that I might be in the peri stage , just need some reassurance . Thanks for reading this far , sorry if I've run on a bit

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated xx

Hi and welcome Molly74

Sorry to hear of your problems.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of information to think about on here, which might vary in advice!

First things first - you may or may not be at a peri -menopausal stage but you need to get your hormonal levels checked first for oestrogen , testosterone, and progesterone , plus your FSH and LH levels- all routine stuff to be done on the NHS.
Thyroid  functioning levels (T4 and T3)  levels would be helpful in case it's due to  an underactive thyroid.
Get back to your GP and advise them your Consultant suggested those symptoms may be due to hormonal  imbalances.
Even if the results fall within a so called "normal range" come back on here and post again.
xx

Hello Molly74 and welcome to the forum.

I agree with freckles that a blood test to check hormones would be a good idea as many of your symptoms could be due to the menopause.

I am post meno but still have the internal shaking and often feel nauseous. My mind is nowhere near as sharp and  I could worry for England! I also don't suffer particularly bad sweats, even at night.

Hopefully you can prompt your GP into at least investigating the hormone connection and do let us know how you get on.

Take care.

Hi Molly - I just wanted to say that you describe my experience to a T, with the mucus. It started for me a couple of years ago, post nasal drip type symptoms and each cold I had hung around in the sinuses and the post nasal drip got worse. I also have dry eyes at the same time, more sneezing as well. I went through all the scenarios and I have put it down to hormones. My optician did say the dry eyes were hormone related, so I guess a dry nose is too.  I did once find a reference to hormonal rhinitis but I can't remember where.  No official diagnosis for me, but it is related to peri for me, I am certain.

I am 46 and my cycles started changing about a year ago and just before that the mucus issue started. Make sure you up your water intake, moisturise your entire body and use saline nasal spray and eye drops when you get the symptoms. Those things have helped me.

Hi, be aware that blood tests are not always helpful in determining the peri stage, my menopausal specialist says 'they often only indicate when the ovaries have failed and not when they are failing. I was kept going for a few years being told I was not peri by my GP's, probably because I was 39 at the time and they felt I was too young and also the blood tests all showed normal levels. But yes my periods became lighter and shorter and I had really dry scratchy sore eyes (particularly at night) amongst other symptoms.
I have found this forum so helpful, explore and take notes xx

Thankyou all very much for taking the time to respond , it's comforting to know that I'm not alone . I'm off to the ophthalmologist at the hospital tommorow so he can have a look at my corneas, apparently I'm getting a ring around them and they need to have a closer look . I will ask him about hormones and my dry eyes .

I intend to go to my GP tommorow and basically tell them I've diagnosed myself and see what they say .

Thanks all again for advice
