vagifem help please
« on: June 15, 2016, 12:27:21 PM »

Hello Ladies,

I started taking Vagifem 3 weeks ago, first 4 days are the best I've had in almost 3 months, then I went down with another attack of Cystitis which set me back a bit, this is the 3rd one in 12 weeks, each urine sample grew cultures when sent off for testing, the last one had 2 different bacteria growing, the doctor has now referred me to the hospital, my problem is my symptoms are starting to bother me again with a burning feeling up inside I know it's early days and I'm using the Vagifem every other night but I still feel like I need to wee a lot even though I've had antibiotics, is this what VA feels like, any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you  ::)

Very difficult to know. Can you give another water sample to Drs and get it tested if you are 48 hrs from your last antibiotic dose to see if there is still bacteria present as this is the best way to distinguish symptoms as both conditions give similar symptoms >:(

If there is no infection present then its probably the VA.  Its early day with vagifem, I guess you did the two weeks loading every night and are you now doing it every other night??

margaret - I expect you have now got a resistance to the antibiotics that you have been given - the 3 days course is often not enough.  You may need an extended course of ABs to clear the infection.  Do you drink half a teaspoon of bicarb in water 3 times a day?  I find this really helps if burning flares up.
It will take some time for the Vagifem to really work and if the infection isn't clearing properly then this won't help the burning and weeing issues.
I would ask the GP if, in the mean time ill you see the specialist, it might be a good idea to be on a more powerful AB mix for at least 7 days to help clear the infection? DG x

If an infection is being found each time then it does mean there are things you might try. It might be a bit old-fashioned now, but have you ever come across Angela Kilmartin and her advice on cystitis and thrush? She was an opera singer, it ended her career, and she ended up becoming a bit of an expert on it, writing quite a few books.
I used to have lots of problems and ended up going to see her, though the books were very helpful. There was lots of advice on weeing after sex (not your problem I suspect!) but also on having a thorough wash after a bowel motion as that's where the bugs are usually coming from. Her "method" was to soap backside thoroughly then rinse with a bottle of warm water as you sit back on the loo. That way, everything is washed backwards not forwards.
I wonder if there is a mix of things going on here? You might possibly be re-infecting yourself in some way (and that doesn't mean personal hygiene is at fault, but that you're susceptible and have to take extreme measures as described above). The bugs may well be resistant to 3 day antibiotic courses, as DG suggests. And you've got the problems of ageing/thinning/oestrogen-deficient skin and tissues which are more susceptible to infection.
The bicarb idea is good (though it tastes grim - I used to live on the stuff in my youth) because it keeps your wee at a pH which makes it less acid. That makes it more comfortable and harder for the bugs to grow.
Like DG I'd keep on with the vagifem - it should help make your bladder and urethral tissue less vulnerable to infection and paid. And only use soap on your bum - it's too harsh for your vulva, etc.
Good luck - really hope you get this sorted soon.
