New to mm
« on: April 28, 2016, 05:26:55 PM »

Hi, I'm 47 and have been peri menopausal for seven years.  I've struggled through and dr was most unhelpful so citalapram and no hrt.  I have lost pelvic flexibility and wee myself a minimum of twice a day which combined with lack of sleep and irritability are the worst. The night sweats, aches and rest seem easy in comparison.

I have at long last moved doctors and they will be putting me on hrt which I am over the moon about. My partner left as fed up with sex drought and my snappiness and I fell out with my best friend which spurred me to make the change.

On the upside the best friend is an alcoholic who overstepped boundaries and was very draining in the end but if not menopausal I would have put up with. Partner and I had issues anyway so hoping the change of life will be a new and positive chapter.

Now it's a matter of deciding which hrt is right for me. I am currently thinking as after two years of sporadic periods and now none for 6 months of the mirena coil and a gel to help with the bladder.

Will this be sufficient to alleviate the other symptoms especially irritability? Thanks

Hello & welcome.  I love your user name!

I'm not very knowledgeable on HRT, but I know different regimes work for different women, so I think it's a case of trying something for a few months and seeing if it works before trying something else if it doesn't.  But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.  I hope you manage to find a solution quickly - this meno lark is no joke!

Hi, welcome to the forum,
I can't help on the HRT question but wanted to say that I too had a useless GP Practice and have just recently moved to a much smaller one with only one full time and two part time GP's and it was the best thing I did. They are so lovely and you don't have to book double appointments etc if you want to discuss more than one thing. You can have as much time as you want and it's a breath of fresh air.
As for your partner - well he sounds like no loss leaving you just because he wasn't getting sex.
Hope the HRT gives you a new lease of life.

Thank you for a nice welcome.  I'm glad you liked my username 👍. The mm site is a great resource and I'm learning loads. I just need to keep it in perspective because so far I've convinced myself I've got a prolapse and arthritis.  I will keep telling myself I am going through menopause and its not terminal.

If anyone can recommend some good books to read I would be grateful.

Have a wonderful bank holiday weekend.

Beautifulprune - I'd possibly try a sequential HRT like Femoston  1/10first to see how you get.  However, your suggestion of a Mirena with oestrogen (as either gel or patch) is also very good and if you have had a Mirena before and got on well with it, then I would definitely go for this option.  I'd ask for a referral to a special clinic that can help with the incontinence - the HRT might help a bit but the right exercises can make all the difference.
Hopefully your new GP will do a thorough assessment and support you well.  Do read up all the info on this site and print stuff off to discuss at the appointment.  Dg x

Hi - you asked about good books - I found The Wisdom of Menopause helpful - not sure of the author. There is a women's health physio based in Sheffield - she was on Women's Hour some time ago - Vicky Keates. I have a prolapse and related bladder issues improved greatly following advice from her. I went to see her privately and she was knowledgeable, down to earth, easy to talk to. Good luck with everything and Happy Bank Holiday weekend. D x

Hi Beautifulprune - welcome to MM. There is a book list at the top of the page under "More" if you'd like to take a look.

I'd just like to say that for the "weeing" yourself problem it would be a good idea to get your doc to refer you to a pelvic floor specialist clinic (sometimes called a continence clinic) for help with this. HRT will ease the problem a bit but you will need some specific exercises to really get on top of the problem. http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/incontinence/Pages/Gettinghelp.aspx
