Palpitations and HRT
« on: April 28, 2016, 09:53:41 AM »

I have always had attacks of palpitations, normally at night, but these got worse a few years back. I have a mild heart defect so was referred to hospital , everything was fine and cardiologist didn't really have an explanation for them, although said it could be hormonal. He did prescribe 25mg atenolol to take at night.

I started Estradot 50 and had a Mirena fitted two weeks ago. This was because my VA needs more than daily Vagifem, meno specialist also said it would help the palpitations.
But....for the last few nights, apart from one night, the palpitations have been awful.
Googling this morning, I have read that HRT can make palpitations worse and other reports saying oestrogen deficiency does :-\ so I am most confused.
I have booked to see doctor, but can't get an appointment for 2 weeks, although can get an emergency if needed.
My last period was 13 months ago.
Any suggestions please :'(

Palpations will come and go whether on HRT or not - it seems to be a common complaint at our time of life. It seems to happen to me a lot when not on HRT but when on HRT I only get palpitations when I'm over tired or unwell. I'm sure it will settle Tinkerbell - body still adjusting to the hormones I expect. DG x

That's what I thought, I have resisted the urge to rip the patch off and am only drinking water after 4pm.

Oestrogen took my palpitations away progesterone brought them back! Which is why I take utrogestan.

I agree with DancingGirl.  I have had palpitations on and off all my life.  Sometimes they seem related to anxiety and stress, sometimes around having a viral infection, sometimes with PMT, sometimes for no apparent reason....  They seemed to get significantly worse at night since I became perimenopausal but with no change since starting HRT.  I too have a heart condition (and a pacemaker) but my cardiologist said they weren't related and not to be concerned.  Hope you get the reassurance you need when you get to check in with GP, though obviously if they become more troublesome or worrying, then ask to see someone sooner  :-*

Hi.  Take a look at the thread below and see if you think that may help.
