What a hideous cake Bake Off winner makes for the queen
« on: April 21, 2016, 05:57:05 PM »

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3552099/Great-British-Bake-winner-Nadiya-Hussain-makes-cake-Queen-90th-Birthday.html

I have never seen anything so hideous. I would be embarrassed if I made this. It is grotesque and uneven and looks like a GCSE kid made it.

It's not like she had a time limit to work to on the TV prog so I can't understand why this is the best she could come up with.

Well I really like the cake and don't mind it being a bit wonky. :)

I don't mind plain, minimalist stuff but it needs to be perfectly presented.  Any blemish at all will show up as there's nothing to disguise or cover it.  This just looks lumpy and uneven and at the top of the striped cake it is really poorly finished off.

I had cakes made professionally for a special birthday and a christening cake in recent years and both were flawless.  The christening cake was very plain. Two layers, one for a boy and one for a girl with tiny footprints and a pink and blue bear but it was beautifully made.

Let's be honest, This Royal cake is pants!

The picture they keep using of it being cut looks wonky but the others don't  ::)

I hope it tasted good.

I took my mum to a celebratory tea yesterday for about 100 older people and the cake there was a million times better than the real Royal one.  It looked professional and all the old people clapped and cheered when it was brought out.

Well, I agree it's not at all traditionally royal in style, but it's very contemporary and (sorry!) cutting-edge (I did say sorry!) and I actually quite like it, even though it leans a bit.

(Further thoughts...) And as well as the gold section, a lot of it is in purple - a very regal colour.....and she's also obviously noticed the queen's liking for hats and personalised it that way, because I think the lower sections look rather like hat boxes!   So, hats off to Nadiya!

I didn't think it looked too bad, well apart from leaning. That may have been due in part to temperatures. My friend's wedding cake did something similar due to heat. Icing softened & it started tilting. I thought it looked quite modern.
