progesterone and estrogen after total hysterectomy
« on: March 29, 2016, 02:50:53 PM »

Hi all im new to this and i guess there is no cure for this horrible period in time. I get fed up with people who stigmatise the menopause as just hot flushes as it is so much much more.
I am 46 and had a total hysterectomy over 2years ago,  i seem to suffer with the lot ranging from anger, tiredness, low enthusiasm, and severe bloating etc etc.....
I have tried many forms of hrt and now im sat here with a stomach so swollen it hurts. Im sure the doctor dreads me coming through his door and also im fed up with going to see him. I just want to be normal !!!!
My partner is supportive but sometimes i wonder how much he can take with my mood swings and i have 2 young children that know mummy is menopausal.
I also now suffer with dystonia that come in storms, being anxious and tired doesn't help with keeping it at bay. Medication is carefully monitored as i have had 3 stints in A and E from dystonia.
I seem to spend alot of time searching for a miracle cure that i haven't found.
I suffered really bad previous to hysterectomy and thought i would feel alot better . How nieve was i ...
I have found from  searching the net the De Monte Centre and they say women should be getting progesterone as well as estrogen if they have had a full hysterectomy even though doctors say we dont need it.
I am wondering if anyone has had both  after total hysterectomy and has it helped ??
I know i have gone on but i do feel better and if you do read this im dorry i dont have a miracle cure 😂

:welcomemm:  did your Consultant not discuss HRT requirements B4 surgery ………  :bang:.

Keeping a food/mood diary can be helpful.  It gives an idea as to how you are the whole month ……… to see if any particular part of the HRT makes you better/worse.  Sure someone will be along later!

Browse round, make notes ;-)

Hi Stylesm

 :welcomemm: from me too!

I don't really know what dystonia is and am none the wiser after looking it up....but sorry to hear anyway.

However re the HRT - when you say total hysterectomy - do you mean ovaries too? What HRT are you taking at the moment? In your position I would use a transdermal HRT ( ie through the skin) - either oestrogen patch or gel - which delivers oestrogen directly into the system without having to go through the liver and therefore fewer side effects.

All the different types are listed here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/treatafter.php

Also if you have had ovaries removed - it is not extra progesterone that is needed but most likely testosterone. There is information about this here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/aftermeno.php
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/testosterone.php

However it is not usual possible to get this on NHS - although without ovaries you should be offered this - but unless you have an implant it has to be offered off licence as a gel and not many GPs are au fait with this. Perhaps if not you can ask to be referred to a specialist if there is a meno clinic in your area or fairly nearby?

If your stomach is swollen so that it is painful - if this is not a normal side effect of the medication you are taking then you should report this to your doc to be checked out?

You are right - many people think the menopause is just a few flushes and sweats and then poof - all gone along with periods - that's what I thought too!!!!

There isn't a miracle cure - but there are several things you can do/take that will enable you to function better and have a better quality of life - hopefully we can help a little with that? :)

Thankyou so much for the information and the time to reply.  Yes ovaries removed. Gyn only saw me once after op and doctor has been dealing with it since. At present I am taking Ellesmere  solo 1mg. I have tried patches, gels,  tablets even higher doses. It seems I'm very sensitive like I said before I get all the symptoms at one time or another.  Am I expecting to much...
I have read about the testosterone and that is very interesting another thing to give my doctor a headache with or open his little book to check .
I may ask him now to refer me back to gyn. Just looked at going private and of course it's pricey....
