Rosacea
« on: January 28, 2016, 10:33:45 PM »

I had a couple of periods of time in my 40s when I had acne type blemishes on my face, despite having very dry, eczema prone skin. The first time it was treated with a long course of ABs, which didn't help, but both times the blemishes faded after a year or so.

After starting HRT and while trying testosterone the blemishes came back. I blamed it on testosterone as it can cause acne and stopped the treatment. Sadly, it has got worse and different gps gave different diagnosis, one insisting it was impetigo. I have no medical training, but I know it's not that! I recently saw my very helpiful doctor who thinks it is Rosacea. I read up about it a bit and am trying an AB gel course for 8 weeks. ( warns that you should avoid alcohol due to unpleasant side effects. Being very good!) This diagnosis seems to make more sense. No improvement after the first week.

Has anyone else got Rosacea? Any tips about cleansing and moisturising and makeup that doesn't aggravate it?

Sadly I've got Rosacea too Ju Ju. It's always worse when I'm off HRT. I never had any skin problems in my teens but definitely since going into meno it has been a problem.

The doc prescribed me the same as you I suspect - metronidazole cream - but I didn't realise what it was until after I'd left the surgery and I am allergic to this in tablet form and the pharmacist said that I mustn't use it. I haven't been back for anything else yet. I find it quite painful at times and annoying. I also get itchy eyes and didn't realise that this is connected. Hate the thought of getting that bulbous nose that can sometimes happen!!

I haven't got any tips but there is some sort of concealer that you can buy I believe.

Thanks Taz. Hopefully neither of us will be renamed Rudolf!

Yes, I've been prescribed metronidazole gel. I didn't have teenage acne, just very dry skin. I've been avoiding makeup, as last time I wore it, the worst area became very sore.

Hi Juju I haven't had rosacea but I went through a spell of having what looked like psoriasis plaques on the sensitive thin skin below the eyes and odd plaques on my face. They were very itchy and makeup aggravated them, although I still used it especially concealer to hide them. Anyway, the doctor recommended a cleanser called Cephaphil which I buy from boots, it's a watery white emulsion you use with water just the same as you would use any face wash. It did the trick and I've used it ever since. It's not cheap as its especially for sensitive skin, but it keeps the skin hydrated. Hope this helps...

I was reading that Rosacea does make your face more photosensitive in the sun, so it may not the AB tablets that caused that problem. I'm glad I'm not a teenager and so worried about how I look.

Juju its Cetaphil cleanser I use, I misspelled it. It's soap free and dermatologically tested.

I was just reading about kefir, made from goats milk.  Very interesting stuff - thinking of having a go myself for gut problem.  It mentioned Rosacea too, has a good success rating for treating that.

I developed this in my mid thirties and am having a bad flare of it at the moment, now have a few on my nose which is worrying me as until now it has only affected my cheeks.

I have tried Metrogel but it stung like mad and I had to wash it off.
Three years ago I took antibiotics for 10 weeks as I had a breast abscess and my Roscea greatly improved, unfortunately two weeks after I finished them it was as bad as ever.

I use Simple products as I find those suit my skin.

I have yet to find any triggers, although sun and the cold wind make it worse.

An ex neighbour once said she could see I liked a drink or two because of the redness, that comment has made me really sensitive about it and I will not go out without foundation on.

Hi

I had rosacea in my thirties for many years, one skin specialist I saw said that she believed there was a hormonal link.  I took a low dose antibiotic for a long while and came off of it and it all came back so took it for another 6 months and then it disappeared.  I had it mostly on my neck, chin, nose and eyelids, and was very conscious of it.

It's taken several doctors and 20 years to get to this diagnosis! Some inappropriate treatments along the way. In my 40s, patience was the best treatment and it faded both times after a year or two. This time patience hasn't worked. I have a horrid red area under my nostrils and now my nose, cheeks and chin are joining in the fun. The area under my nose was aggravated by makeup, so I have had to go makeup less. I wouldn't mind so much if I could cover it up. No one else minds though! None of those horrid teenage worries about how you look!
