Why?
« on: January 26, 2016, 12:22:11 PM »

Just when I thought things were improving, sweats and flushes less severe.....I start mild palpitations and have had two incidents when my head just went weird, like a rush and spinning inside (not outside if that makes sense). The first time a couple of month ago I passed off as meno but it happened again last night and was really scarey. Doctors this morning, BP ok, listened to heart, stethoscope on neck, felt pulse....all ok. Bloods taken last December were also fine. He sent me to the walk hospital for ECG guy there said it looked ok but report would go to GP. I'm so weary, so very weary of all this. I put all this weird stuff down to meno, but should I? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Came off HRT twelve months ago, thought it was the right thing to do.....but there always seems to be something....it's so depressing.

Nothing terrible - for me it's a sudden woosh in side my head, enough to make me go 'oh!' …….. and don't get me started on the brain zaps  ::).

I probably have a nerve in the back of my neck which suddenly becomes trapped when I move in certain directions.  But until it happens I can't remember which way I move  ::)

For years, probably 20+ and nope, it's so sudden and gone so quickly that it doesn't scare me.  Probably does those around me when I go 'oh!'  ::).  I never fainted.  It doesn't happen often.  The zaps can be common with certain medications or with certain spinal wear and tear.  It's never been bad enough to go to the GP because is it difficult to explain: as is the sudden 'off balance' problem, again for the last 25+ years - did wonder if it might be MS but it hasn't got any worse …..

If your GP is doing tests, that for the good!

I agree, it is difficult to explain the feeling, told the doc I put the first one down as a "funny turn" but then on googling that it said...."don't ignore a funny turn as it can turn out to be anything but funny" and can be a precursor to a stroke......then I got scared

Of course - Dr Google is good at scaring people  ::).   If someone feels that something isn't 'right' then a chat with the GP or Practice Nurse is always advisable.

As far as I understand palpitations are a menopausal symptoms - caused by low oestrogen? If you have come off HRT after a long time then you may well get all sorts of symptoms due to oestrogen deficiency which you did not have before. As oestrogen deficiency is for ever - it's as well to know about some of these - but I do agree it is always wise to get anything untoward checked out in case it is something serious. Hopefully it will all continue to be fine and not too debilitating - unnerving I can imagine though!

I've had "funny turns" too which I've never got checked out - and I am on HRT. Since my husband bought a blood pressure monitor - in my case I think they're to do with low blood pressure!

Thanks Hurdity. I do have a BP monitor, got it years ago, BP never been a problem....i appreciate a lack of estrogen does weird things, I had been on hrt for twelve years so I think my body is reacting. 12 months on and such odd symptoms keep coming, I just wonder when, if ever, my body will accept its age and be calm. The heat my body can still generate during a flush is really too much to tolerate and makes me feel so ill and a weird head on top of that completely freaks me out, only women who have been through this can appreciate just how awful it is. On bad days I feel I can't handle it anymore.....its been going on for so long

skkb, your post reminds me of someone I used to work with who had a turn in the night, thought she was having a heart attack, went to A&E and it turned out after extensive investigation she was peri menopause.

Is there a particular reason why you have stopped taking HRT?  When you did take it, how effective was it and how much better did you feel?

Perhaps you could reconsider taking it again, it's not worth feeling the way you do and there is no time limit on it, you don't have to stop.

I took HRT happily for 12 years.....my body misses the estrogen I'm sure. I stopped 12 months ago thinking that 12 months on and things would surely have settled down, alas not so....just when I think it's getting better....bang.....the heat is back with a vengeance and all the things that it triggers like the weird heads......and wow oh wow the heat is intense to the point I feel I will spontaneously combust. I would be reluctant now to return to HRT having stopped it a year ago now and being 65. Seriously thinking of private clinic for hormone help as don't think I can cope much longer

skkb, it's all about quality of life.  I can't see the point of suffering when you don't have to and perhaps a trip to a hormone expert would be the answer.  I don't know how sympathetic your GP is but most GPs are not experts on hormones or the menopause and despite the new NICE guidelines, many women are still not getting much traction.

I don't know how you are placed financially but I think a trip to Professor Studd or Dr. Annie Evans would help you no end.  I think you need a one to one discussion with someone who really knows what they are talking about who can run through your options with you.  You should be able to get this service from the NHS but it doesn't always work like that and at the end of the day, it is your life and you must do what is best for you.  Life's too short to suffer in this way.

I cant comment on HRT, but I have a relative, who had meno all done in her 40's and took HRT. She is now 67 and occasionally gets palpitations and we joke when we are there at around 10pm she gets a hot flush. Seems to me everything is normal as long as the docs have done all the checks which your have.

Thank you MaryG....fortunately I am in a position to go to a private clinic as I agree a one to one with a specialist might be the way forward. This is impacting on my quality of life enormously now and I feel quite desperate. I did attend an NHS meno clinic years ago but it was when I was taking HRT and it worked well, but they are very pro HRT and that isn't where I Am now!! How do I find an appropriate private clinic of repute, I M in the East Midlands any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
