New to Oestrogel
« on: January 15, 2016, 12:50:07 PM »

i have a Mirena coil as my womb lining was a little thicker than it should be and I was using Evorel 50 patches. My GP suggested reducing these to 25 which really were less than useless so I persuaded her to let me try Oestogel. She knew nothing about this product but said all the info I needed would be on the leaflet. Well it sort of is but I have been using one pump as I was trying to keep the dose as low as I need and although my mood is tons better-i feel calmer and less ratty- I am still getting night sweats and some flushes and my sleep is still disturbed. I've only been trying it for a week so my question is will things improve or should I try two pumps and does anyone know where I can find out how much oestrogen is in one pump. I've searched Google and can't find out.

Hi chatty gal,
Your story sounds like mine, I had mirena fitted in December and started with one pump of oestrogel, I did feel lots better, but still had hit sweats at night, but mostly first thing in the morning.
I persevered for five weeks on one pump, then saw my GP for a check, and she agreed I should try two pumps, so I've been applying two pumps daily since last week, no more night sweats, and spotting is reduced, I understand it's considered safe to go up to 4 pumps daily. I think oestrogel provides 1.5 mg oestrogen (2pumps)

My only issue is I'm feeling a bit snappy, and low mood for the past few days, I'm hoping I'm not starting to react to the progestogen in the coil, still early days though.

Hope this helps X

That's great, well done for getting hold of the gel from the NHS, it really is fantastic stuff!  Although 1 pump is supposed to be the equivalent of a 25mg patch, I find I absorb the gel much better than the patches.  I was initially on 3 pumps of gel per day which is supposed to be about the same as a 75mg patch but it gave me very heavy period so now I am on 2 pumps which is arguably about the same of a 50mg patch.  The interesting thing is, the 50mg patch was completely useless for me so it would appear it is not an exact science and will depend on how well you absorb the different products.

1 pump of gel is very low and I am not sure you have to worry too much about your lining building up now that you have a Mirena coil because you will shed if it builds up too much.  You could try 1 pump for a month but if the symptoms don't improve, I wouldn't hang around, I would go for 2 pumps.  Once you get your dose right, your symptoms will disappear.

I am on one and a half pumps, just plunge the pump down a little way so a blob comes out try that and alternate legs at night, if it doesnt help them you can up it to 2 quite safely.
