Hi elainewin. Did your doc suggest a different type of HRT - that is if you want to continue?  Climagest contains norethisterone which is notorious for causing pmt type symptoms including anxiety and depression. There are other, kinder HRTs you could try if you want to continue down the HRT route so don't let your experience of Climagest put you off. Lots of us have to try a few before we hit on one that makes us feel better. It is advised to try each one for at least three months as most side effects do wear off after this time.

As for side effects. As you have only been on it for a short time then you shouldn't notice any side effects as such but you will probably have a return of the symptoms which you were hoping to alleviate with HRT fairly quickly.

Hi Taz2 Yes i mentioned to her about patches and Utrogestan but she said at my age it was more likely to still cause me problems so i didnt really have much choice,as i was frightened to have the same effects on the last 12 days on climagest ...she said not to worry as at 55 i will soon be over it lol...I lost faith in her tbh she didnt seem interested as such...i picked her out of all the people in the surgery as she was of older generation  but never mind cat feel any worse than what i have in 9 wks .

It makes me so angry when doctors do this! At 55 is when you are likely to need it as your oestrogen levels continue to drop. If you do want to try again then FemSeven patches don't contain norethisterone but Evorel do. I had good success with FemSeven, apart from the fact that they don't always stick that well, but Evorel made me feel much as you describe. Someone else will be along soon I'm sure with advice re the oestrogel and utrogestan which I've never used. Don't give up!

What symptoms were you suffering before starting HRT?

The only thing that has ever helped me with the day and night sweats has been HRT I'm afraid. I haven't found, personally, that HRT helped my low mood but sleeping better because of no more night sweats probably did help lift the low mood a bit as the tiredness got less.

Let us know how you get on!!

Do you have any other gps at the practice you can see?

The best one I have seen was a middle-aged male locum  ;)  Not what you would have expected in theory, but very sympathetic.

My original gp surgery was very much try things out and see what suits.  The current one is a bit meh! - I am reserving judgement..........

I'd ask for a referral, if you haven't already had one. So many different forms & types of HRT out there. I've actually found the male GPS at my surgery to be more sympathetic. Weird though it sounds. The female ones, all young, have differing opinions. Their time will come!

elainewin, I'm struggling to understand how your GP thinks that coming off HRT completely will help with low mood, night sweats and sleep problems.  It is ridiculous to suggest that you would have the same problems that you have now if you took the Oestrogel with Utrogestan, both of which are known to have a far greater success rate than your current HRT which contains norethisterone and is notorious for causing all the side effects that you have.  I'm surprised that your doctor does not know this.

How do you feel about going to seeing a private specialist?  I would recommend Professor John Studd, he is in London charges about £300 for a consultation - I know it is a lot of money but it would be worth it and he does take credit cards if that helps.  I think he would be able to give you some very good advice and would probably prescribe the Oestrogel and the Utrogestan without any hesitation.

You have done your best and tried to get treatment from your GP but it has not worked out so perhaps it's time to try something else.

Merry Christmas to you too.  ;)  Just want to say that lots of us have the same experience as you the first time we try HRT - its really common - but at the end of the day it depends on how bad your symptoms are as to how many you feel able to try. Here's to a better 2016!

Hello elainewin.

Hopefully you will feel better without climagest and you can always approach a specialist in the future.

I also noticed that older male GPs were more sympathetic. Infact HRT was promoted by my doctor long before I had any problems and I learned  through a mutual friend that his wife had struggled with her menopause and he'd had a very difficult time getting her HRT right.

Wishing you well.
