Should I be on HRT if I have regular periods?
« on: November 15, 2015, 04:58:37 PM »

Hello
I went to see my GP last week because of my ongoing depression and low levels of Ferritin.  He was surprised that I was taking Femoston 1/10 because I have regular periods, even though they stop for winter, usually between November and March.  He thought I shouldn't be taking it and has referred me to a gynaecologist for menopause treatment and heavy bleeding investigations.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm 44 btw and supposedly peri about a blood test about 2 years ago.

I presume you are taking some sort of iron supplement? Also if you are on Femoston 1/10 you will still have regular periods - as a withdrawal bleed - but this will include the effect of your own hormones and your own cycle if you are still having one and ovulating.

Actually it's great that your doc is referring you to a gynaecologist as at least you will have specialist menopause treatment. If your cycle is coming and going then you are most likely to be peri-menopausal - but at your young age I think various blood tests etc are recommended to be carried out to check everything over.

Try not to worry too much - it may be that the gynae will recommend a different dose of HRT - maybe higher if you are having an early menopause. Do hope you will get the right treatment sorted out soon so that you feel better.

Hello

My appointment wasn't what I expected. It was more to do with the heavy periods than the management of menopause.  However he did agree that I should be on a topical HRT rather than tablets due to my sticky blood syndrome.

I'm currently on femoston 1/10, can anyone recommend a gel/progesterone that is similar to f 1/10 please?

Also - if I finish taking my femoston 1/10, can I switch directly from one to another? Also with the grey tablets which I don't like, do I have to take all 14 as I am having regular periods? Or could I take 10 maybe?

Speaking as someone who has faffed about with taking oral contraceptives and stopped taking hrt mid-cycle a couple of times:

Take all 14.  It works out better in the long run.  Messing about with them messes up your cycle, gives you spots and makes it harder to work out if the new stuff is doing what you want, then you have to trial it for longer.

(ie - do as I say, not as I do  ::) )
