It seems there is a reason I broke my fibula..........
« on: October 29, 2015, 01:55:31 PM »

It seems I have osteoporosis.  :-\
Had a DXA scan this morning the reading showed osteoporosis in a hip (not sure if it's just one or both  :-\)
The osteoporosis nurse will send a report to my GP who will prescribe Bisphosphonates to slow down bone loss (not sure why the ON can't prescribe given it's her doing the report but hey ho ::))
Report won't get to GP for about 3 to 4 weeks  ???

I know it's not life threatening but I'm not feeling massively positive at the moment.

Not what you wanted to hear Limpy.

Have you thought about contacting the Osteoporosis Society. You can actually call them for a chat and they are incredibly helpful.

They can give specific advice too.

The number is 0808 800 0035.

I would give them a call.  This condition can be arrested if treated early enough.  The pelvis is the thickest bone in the body so is usually the place to do the scan.

Brisk walking is also recommended  ::) but having looked out the window  :o  ;)

Thanks a lot ladies.

It is a bit of a "surprise" as I wasn't aware of any family history of it.
But as has been said, at least I know about it now and can get my act together regarding weight bearing exercise (when fibula is totally mended) and calcium in the diet.

I've looked at the osteoporosis society website  it's got lots of really useful stuff - I will give them a ring tomorrow when I'm a bit more settled, oh and after Waitrose have been and we've put the shopping away  ::)

OH is currently sat there quoting facts at me - 35% of white post menopausal women have osteoporosis of the hip, spine or distal (sp?) forearm. Oh, and climbing stairs is a very effective form of weight bearing exercise  ::)

Thanks again ladies you have helped so so much.

It is always a shock to get news like this when you thought things were ok.  Hope the leg mends well.

I will start stairclimbing forthwith - it seems a good start  ;D

As far as I know it has always been known that calcium supplementation on its own does not work.  I think they are now finding more about the mechanisms which keep the calcium in our bones.

Also, it depends on your lifestyle when you were younger.  I have a friend who has scans who is osteopoenic. (sp?) which is a stage before osteoporosis and she is not yet post menopause.  This is because she was too thin when she was young due to anorexia.   She keeps trying to get me to have scans - she was right about my vit D so maybe I should listen to her.

Oh yes - she made me do it too.  Also with fish oils for omega 3.

I had my vitD tested as part of something else and it came back low and I was shocked  :o  I thought I had plenty sunlight, milk and sardines.

Girls don't get into the sun often enough and those who wear the veil are prone to lack of VitD so are prone to OP later.  Because children are carted to/from School, it was found about 9 years ago that many are forming rickets  :o, add to that lack of calcium due to young people staying too thin …….
