Bio Identical HRT
« on: October 28, 2015, 06:29:29 AM »

Morning ladies, for what its worth, watched a documentary on cancer last night and one or other highly esteemed Prof was saying that bio identical HRT is completely safe to use as it mimics our own hormones and there is no added risk. Of course he did not mention extended use I would imagine that would fall into another discussion altogether but just thought to mention it for those ladies who were a bit doubtful....:) use it dont use it....and dont shoot the messenger..... :)

Prof Studd is renowned for never saying anything negative about HRT at all! On a scale of 1-10, pro HRT at 10, he at No 10 and always has been! I've seen him on TV before and heard him on radio. I'm not disagreeing with him but there are other really good drs out there who say there is just not absolute proof just yet and they'd be an 8 or a 9 on the scale!

yes but in this particular discussion the specialist was referring to bio identical hrt specifically, as opposed to other types of HRT not sure if the Proff also promotes bio only or prescribes all types.....

I think it's important to take on board that this is his opinion as much as anything, based on some research which does point in that direction. But it's not yet proven beyond any doubt; the draft NICE guidelines acknowledge that different types of HRT may give different outcomes and suggest more research is needed. There are some studies in France and Denmark using a reasonable number of women and over a long period of time which appear to show the risks are minimal with progesterone and bio identical oestroggen. The main foci of the studies are breast safety and blood clots. Consultants tend to be more aware of all of this as it's their specialism but it will perhaps need NICE to make absolute recommendations for GPs to take notice.

I believe it is the long term use of HRT that is usually considered the real risk factor but this is now being slowly refuted as more women are insisting they want to stay with HRT with no real negative consequences. Studies are now showing no greater risk with long term use but of course a women's genetic risk of breast cancer, being overweight, smoking or drinking too much alcohol needs to be taken into account when prescribing HRT. I think the difficulty is whether it is actually HRT that increases the risk or not - as we go into our 60s the chance of getting beast cancer increases significantly anyway, whether we use HRT or not.
The use of bio identical hormones is certainly changing things - to me it makes sense that if we simply use something that our bodies recognise and welcome then this will have fewer negative effects.
We also mustn't forget that the protective factors of HRT can, and for me, certainly do outweigh the risks.  Lack of sleep due to a lack of oestrogen must do irreparably damage to our health. A reduced risk of bowel cancer and osteoporosis are definite plusses with HRT.  I feel physically and mentally better when on HRT - however using HRT is a personal choice.  DG x
