TalkTalk ... Anybody affected?
« on: October 24, 2015, 01:04:22 PM »

You might guess we're with TalkTalk!  Just waiting to see how this develops >:(

Woman on news just saying she's had her bank account wiped out and left overdrawn.

News advice is to NOT speak to anybody who claims to be from TalkTalk either by phone or email.

This is apparently the 3rd 'hacking' this year!  Someone somewhere needs to walk because someone somewhere didn't put protection policies into place! …… who owns TalkTalk?  We've stuck with BT for land-line, internet; mobile is with Tesco but don't know who they employ  :-\

Has your Bank given advice at all?

Talk talk kept the information to themselves for 2 days. Change your passwords PF then shop around for another provider.

Wouldn't it be better to stop any DDs etc and re-sign …….. if that's the way your TalkTalk is paid for  :-\

News now says it's not as serious as first expected.  I think the people who were on TV saying they'd had their bank account emptied had been scammed rather than it being anything to do with TalkTalk.

All the advice I've seen so far assumes you operate your account over the internet.  Does anyone know what the risks are for people who are with talktalk but run their account by post or phone?  My mother has a direct debit set up with them, but doesn't use internet banking.  She has high levels of anxiety at the best of times, so you can imagine what she is like at the moment.  She doesn't like ringing her bank to ask for help as you have to spend so long in the queue and it is an effort for her to get into a branch, so she can't keep checking her balance.

I believe that if she has no internet banking then the only way they will be able to access her account (if they have got her details such as name and address and date of birth from the company's database) are to phone her pretending to be Talk Talk and asking for information. As long as she is aware that Talk Talk wont phone her and any such calls have to be ignored then she should be ok.

I didn't think that Companies were allowed to hold personal information ……. that Companies were supposed to take the initial payments then take if off their computers.  Certainly the Companies that I deal with weekly by phone have to take down my debit card details each week.

If you have online banking for a company they do hold your details CLKD. If you have paper billing then they don't hold as much info. I agree that if you order online from companies they are not allowed to hold your debit/credit card details but they will still have your name and address etc. on file.

Thanks Taz, that is really helpful - I'll warn her about the calls although whether she will remember what I say if she gets a call is another matter!

CLKD, if you have a direct debit set up they have to keep your bank details, and that is what my mother has.
